Tasting Notes
Vinous 96/100
The 2017 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, matured in 70% new oak, has the finest bouquet from the domaine this year. Copious but extremely well defined red cherry, raspberry and rose petal aromas are energetic and seductive. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly confit-like entry, bounding energy and crunchy red and black fruit laced with minerals on the finish. This brilliant Clos de Vougeot surpasses the Ruchottes this year and may well constitute the best wine from the famous walled vineyard.
Anticipated maturity: 2022-2045
Burghound 92-95
More modulated but hardly discreet wood influence stops just short of fighting with the spice and earth-infused red currant-scented nose. Once again there is excellent energy to the broad-shouldered and intense flavors that possess the usual level of youthful austerity on the dusty, sneaky long and powerful finish. As is usually the case with this wine at this stage of its development, this is presently very compact and is going to require at least moderate patience for it to unwind and flesh out.
Robert Parker 96+
The 2017 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is also showing very well, though it’s a little more reserved than the Ruchottes-Chambertin today, unwinding in the glass with notes of ripe cherries and berries that mingle with scents of ponies, exotic spices and loamy soil. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, multidimensional and velvety textured, with a deep and concentrated core, refined structuring tannins and a long, sapid finish. This young Clos Vougeot’s structural elegance is deceptive, as this is a very serious effort built for the long haul, and it is one example of a 2017 red Burgundy that will be better on its 20th birthday than its 10th.
Anticipated maturity: 2027-2055
