The estate was initially founded in 1661 by Pierre de Rauzan, an important figure in Bordeaux’s history who at the time also owned Chateau Margaux and Latour. The Rauzan family were the estate’s caretakers for over two centuries, during which time Thomas Jefferson ordered ten cases of their wine in 1790 after having visited Bordeaux in 1787 – he declared it to be one of the top Second Growths. The estate was first called Domaine de Rauzan, however after Catherin de Rauzan inherited the estate in 1816 and as she was the Baroness of Segla she decided to rename the estate Rauzan Segla for herself.

After changing hands for the first time in 1866, Chateau Rauzan Segla saw a variety of owners and, in combination with the two World Wars, economic crisis and a devastating frost in 1956, the estate’s vineyards fell into disrepair. In 1983 consulting oneologist Emile Peynaud was brought on and three years later many of the vines have been replanted and a modern winery was constructed. Since 1994, the estate has been owned by the Wertheimer family, owners of the luxury giant Chanel. Under the direction of David Orr and John Kolasa the Chateau experienced an overhaul in almost every aspect: the winery was transformed, with smaller stainless steel vats used for individual plot vinification, machine harvesting was eliminated, the Chateau itself was restored and an organic approach of using horses to plough the vineyards was introduced.

In 2015, Nicholas Audebert – formerly of Cheval des Andes, an LVMH estate in Argentina – became Managing Director of the estate’s 45 hectares of vines. The Chateau produces between 10,000 and 12,000 cases a year. Their Grand Vin is a careful blend of Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. With the wine’s quality on the rise since the 1990s, Rauzan Segla joins the like of Chateau Palmer and Brane Cantenac in taking pride of place as one of Margaux’s Second Growth estates, just behind Chateau Margaux itself.
