With 146 years of winemaking history, the family run Bodegas R. Lopez de Heredia is regarded one of the world’s greatest wine estates. The founder, Don Rafael Lopez de Heredia y Landeta, was a visionary of his time, establishing one of the first three bodegas in Rioja Alta as well as setting a precedence of vine ownership to ensure consistency in the quality of their wine production. The first of the vineyards to be purchased was Tondonia in 1913 – a 100 hectare site that became so renowned for its exceptional wines that its name has been incorporated into the estate. The vineyards are planted with Tempranillo along with Graciano, Garnacha and Mazuelo, as well as Viura and Malvasia for the whites. Some of the vines are between 80 and 100 years old, adding complexity to the distinct characteristics from each vineyard.

Since its conception, Lopez de Heredia has never used grapes from other regions in the production of their wines, a fact that is certified with a “Diploma de Garantia”, proudly displayed on the back label of all their bottles. Unlike some other bodegas in the region, Lopez de Heredia continues to use its own cooperage where the entirety of the tree-to-barrel production process has taken place since 1877. Thousands of these hand crafted barrels are moved fifteen metres below ground into the bodega’s cellars that stretch for up to 200 metres. After considerable ageing in both barrel and bottle, and only when deemed to be truly ready, the Bodegas R. Lopez de Heredia wines are released, always to outstanding reviews.
