Located in the east of Pomerol Chateau L’Evangile boasts a fantastic position, reinforced by its illustrious neighbours Petrus, La Conseillante and Cheval Blanc. The estate has two main soil types: clay, which is typical of the Pomerol plateau, and gravel that is usually found in Graves. In combination, these soil types marry the power and concentration from the clay and the delicacy associated with gravel-based wines from Graves to create L’Evangile’s wine. Often relatively tannic in its youth, Chateau L’Evangile benefits greatly from ageing and displays rich, concentrated flavours of black fruit, minerals, and a bouquet of violets and cassis.

The estate was founded in the middle of the 18th Century by the Leglise family under the name of Fazilleau. By the 19th Century the estate considered of 13 hectares and was sold to a lawyer named Isambert who renamed the property to L’Evangile. The estate’s sale in 1862 to Paul Chaperon whose descendants – the Ducasse family – continued to manage and grow the estate for over the following hundred years. Domaines Barons de Rothschild acquired Chateau L’Evangile in 1990 from the widow Simone Ducasse and have continued to uphold the estate’s high standards. Under their direction, L’Evangile’s Grand Vin was refined and a second wine, Blason de L’Evangile, was created. In addition to this, the vineyards were restored and improved and in 2004 a complete renovation of the vat room and cellar was completed.

L’Evangile is considered to be one of the finest wines in Pomerol and, despite to official classification in this region, it often places in the top three of the Cocks et Feret directory rating. Demand for L’Evangile’s wines has increased since the Domaines Barons de Rothschild takeover, and combined with the small quantities produced of their outstanding wine, makes each bottle all the more special.
