Having taken over from his father Jean-Claude, Jean-Marie Fourrier is credited with taking this Gevrey-Chambertin based domaine from almost oblivion to producing some of the most sought after wines in all of Burgundy. Alongside his sister Isabelle and his English wife Vicki, Jean-Marie has expanded the offerings from his domaine by vinifying and bottling their various Premier Cru sites separately – his father used to blend these all together. The domaine’s 10 hectares includes some of Gevrey-Chambertin’s top vineyards, such as Griotte-Chambertin and Clos St Jacques. Fourrier follows a viticultural process similar to that of biodynamic wineries, with meticulous monitoring in the vineyards throughout the year to understand the various influences of the seasons and how to react to this. In the cellar, the grapes are entirely destemmed before natural pre-maceration and fermentation. The entire range of the domaine’s wines, from village to Grand Cru, are then aged in 20% new oak. The resulting wines typically show a remarkable combination of fruit purity, freshness and poise, yet possess a great structure.
