In 1999, Jean-Claude Boisset – one of the largest negociants in Burgundy – amalgamated all the vineyard holdings that had purchased over the years. The result was Domaine de la Vougeraie. Based in Premeaux, just to the south of Nuits St Georges, the domaine’s patchwork of vineyards cover both the Cote de Nuits and the Cote de Beaune and encompasses more than 30 appellations across 74 plots spread over 40 hectares. Domaine de la Vougeraie produces wines at all levels, including 9 Grand Crus and 10 Premier Crus. Their most prized and famous holding in their legendary monopole: the 1er Cru Les Clos Blanc de Vougeot. This iconic site is planted with Chardonnay and small amounts of Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc, yet is completely surrounded by Pinot Noir vineyards, making it one of the most sought after white wines in Burgundy. The entire estate is biodynamically cultivated, following the lunar calendar in the vineyards and cellar. In addition, the introduction of fruit trees, systematic replanting and ploughing of their best terroir by carthorse are all done at the domaine in order to get the best out of each vine, ensure the estate’s longevity and minimise their impact on the land. In the winery, fermentation is done in traditional wooden vats with varying percentages of new oak depending on the differing characteristics of each vintage. Every decision made at Domaine de la Vougeraie is made to ensure the style of their wines focusses on elegance and expressing an ever-more precise terroir.
