Denis Bachelet’s domaine produces limited, small production wines that have gained an avid following from lovers of Gevrey-Chambertin. Denis’ grandfather tended to just under 2 hectares of vines up until his retirement in 1973. The vines were then forgotten and unattended for a decade before Denis established his domaine in 1983 having inherited them from his grandfather. Slowly, by purchasing little plots in Grand Cru Charmes-Chambertin and Premier Cru Les Corbeaux, Denis doubled his domaine’s holdings. The estate boasts some very old vines, in particular some in Charmes-Chambertin which are more than a century old!

The maxim that dictates the approach Denis has to winemaking equally applies to the wines he ends up producing – “la finesse avant tout”. Famed for graceful and delicate Pinot Noirs, Domaine Denis Bachelet creates wines which display pure red fruit aromas and stunning delineation from Bourgogne Rouge up to Grand Cru. The grapes are entirely destemmed before up to eight days of cold maceration. Once the fermentation with natural yeasts has finished the wines are left to settle in the tank for a week before moving to oak barrels. The time are percentage of new oak varies dependent on the wine, however Denis prefers to use moderate amounts only to soften the tannins and never to overpower the wine.
