Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte and its 78 hectares of vineyards sit on a well-positioned gravel plateau in Pessac Leognan. The vines today have an average age between 36 and 65 years, helping to produce wines that are often described as deep, seamless and incredibly elegant. The estate only produces 10,000 cases per year, these highly sought-after Left Bank wines represent world-class expressions of their terroir.

Its history dates back to the 14th Century when the first recorded deeds were signed for a few rows of vines. It wasn’t until four centuries later that Scottish wine merchant George Smith acquired the estate and named it after himself and the gravel plateau (known as Lafitte). In 1842, the estate was purchased by Lodi Martin Duffour-Dubergier, Mayor of Bordeaux and signer of the 1855 classification. Under his tenure, the estate was elevated to Grand Cru Exceptionnel status.

Fast forward to today, and Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte is owned by Daniel and Florence Cathiard who bought the estate in 1990. The couple set about modernising the estate from the winemaking facilities to the approach in the vineyards. Thanks to the Cathiards, the land is now farmed organically, with horses used for ploughing and harvests are done manually. In addition, picking dates for the harvest as well as other viticultural practices are determined by a row-by-row inspection from the Oenoview satellite system. Daniel himself designed the ergonomic pods in which the grapes are stored to prevent oxidation.

The chateau’s red wine cellar is one of the largest underground facilities in Bordeaux and holds up to 1,000 barrels, which are produced at the on-site cooperage. For their Grand Vin, Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte uses around 60-65% Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot contributing around 30% in addition to small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The estate is also famous for its Sauvignon Blanc dominant blend, that is fermented and aged in oak and rests on its lees for one year.
