Chateau Montrose lies on the banks of the Gironde in the Saint Estephe appellation. The first vines were planted in 1815 by Etienne Theore Dumoulin in an area just south of Calon Segur, known as La Lande de l’Escargeon. By the time of the 1855 classification, the estate had grown to 50 hectares and was selling its wines very successfully – at this time the wines were labelled as Montrose-Segur. Chateau Montrose was awarded Second Cru Classe status, which was viewed as a great feat as the vineyards were only 40 years old at the time. This success led to further vineyard expansion at the estate and by 1861 it had reached its current size of 95 hectares.

In 1866, the estate was sold to Mathieu Dollfus who redeveloped existing buildings, modernised facilities and introduced new vine-growing and winemaking techniques. Following outbreaks of odium and phylloxera, many of the vineyards had been devastated and needed to be replanted. From 1896, the estate was purchased and run by Jean Louis Charmolue who continued Dollfus’ work and led Chateau Montrose to greater glory. The Chateau was then acquired in 2006 by Martin and Olivier Bouygues who invested greatly and the estate underwent a modernising reconstruction. This project took seven years to complete but has given Chateau Montrose some of the finest winemaking facilities in the Medoc whilst also respecting the environment and being conscious of energy use. The multi-generational team now at the helm of Chateau Montrose are set to guide the estate in a successful direction.

Its wines remain a deep crimson with richness and strong firm tannins but compared with the past, today the tannins are riper, more complex and a freshness of the fruit harmonies to create a more approachable wine. The deep clay-gravel soils help to produce these outstanding wines that combine richness and complexity. Chateau Montrose is rightly considered to be a Bordeaux colossus, and is among the very best estates producing some of the longest-lived wines.
