To the east of the Saint Emilion plateau, Chateau La Mondotte is one of the smallest vineyards in the appellation, with just 4.5 hectares under vines. The Chateau has been on the rise since the 1990s, gradually becoming one of the highest scoring estates in Bordeaux. The wines produced here are extraordinarily rich, distinguished by a unique mineral-driven character. The soils here are rich in clay, with natural potential for creating super ripe Merlot and Cabernet Franc. A layer of limestone contributes to the mineral character of the wine. The property boasts an impressive array of old vines that are, on average, more than 50 years old. The fruit is sorted before and after de-stemming and the grapes are never crushed. Whole berry fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled, open top, French oak vats for an average of 29 days. La Mondotte is aged in 100% new French oak for an average 18 months, with no fining or filtering.

La Mondotte vineyard was purchased in 1971 by Joseph-Hubert von Neipperg, and was later passed onto his son Stephan who is also the current owner of Canon la Gaffeliere. In fact, in the 1990s Stephan tried to merge the two estates however the move was banned by the INAO, based on Canon la Gaffeliere having a Grand Cru Classe status and La Mondotte not. After this rejection, von Neipperg committed to showing La Mondotte’s true potential and made significant investment in the Chateau. A new fermentation facility was installed, and biodynamic farming was introduced, making La Mondotte a self-sustaining organically farmed vineyard. The famous oenologist Stéphane Derenoncourt was hired as a winemaker.

All of this resulted in the 1996 vintage being awarded 97 points, marking a new era for La Mondotte, with the following vintages scoring even higher. Since then La Mondotte has been one of the highest scoring estates in Bordeaux, often receiving 99 or 100 points from Parker. In September 2012, La Mondotte was classified as Premier Grand Cru Classe, one of only two estates to earn this status.
