We released the iconic 2012 wines from the Verite Estate a fortnight ago, positing that they were destined for perfect scores. Last Friday Robert Parker released his scores awarding 100 points to La Joie 2012 and Le Desir 2012. The 2012 vintage in California is quickly establishing itself as one of the greatest in its history, with the leading estates selling out instantly. Demand for the greatest wines from California is frantic domestically, while collectors the world over look to stock up for future drinking and investment. We have managed to secure a small parcel of La Joie and Le Desir, which following their perfect scores, will experience even greater demand. Further to the 6x75cl cases we also have a small number of magnums available of each. The estate makes just 120 magnums for each wine, making these an extremely rare collector’s item.

As the table below demonstrates, these latest 100 point efforts are extremely undervalued in comparison to all the other 100 point scoring vintages: These trade at an average of £1,815; over 50% more than our special offer price of £1,200 per case. Both La Joie and Le Desir are expected to offer strong short term gains in addition to fantastic long term returns. Less than 1,000 cases are produced of each, which goes a long way to explain the vintage premium; there simply is not enough to fulfil global demand.

Vérité is the French word for truth, a stylistic homage. However, while these wines have been inspired by Bordeaux appellations, each wine comes from a different site or micro-climate which possess its own unique characteristics. This convergence of grape varieties, climate and soil exposition makes each of these wines truly remarkable in their own way. Taken together they are a ‘tour de force’ of the best of Bordeaux. The Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated La Joie is California’s interpretation of the Medoc First Growths and Le Desir is a St.-Emilion doppelgänger, combining Merlot and Cabernet Franc seamlessly in the blend; Think Lafite & Cheval Blanc.

Straddling Bordeaux and Californian winemaking and terroir is no easy task, a difficult line to walk. However, each combines the power and brawn of California without the often criticised extraction, or over oaking. Yet with the symmetry, balance and pedigree of great Bordeaux. After harvesting, each wine is hand sorted, individually fermented from each vineyard block. They then spend 16 months in new French oak barrels and then 18-24 months in bottle before being released to the market.

As a result of the wine’s numerous perfect scores, there has been a huge increase in the demand for Vérité from all around the world.– we encourage collectors to take advantage of this great Napa rarity while you still can. Please note that we have limited availability of both cases and magnums.
