Following on from our Vega Sicilia Unico 2008 release last week, we are delighted to be able to offer the Estate’s most acclaimed wine, Reserva Especial, named 2016, after the year of the release. Vega Sicilia Especial is born out of a wonderful Spanish tradition. Historically very few estates ever bottled their own wine, instead selling in cask. As a result, they would sell two wines, a vintage wine made from that year alone and another wine without a specific harvest which was called Reserva Especial. The Reserva Especial is Vega Sicilia’s most spectacular wine, a blend of three vintages, thereby embracing Spanish ageing tradition and their foremost grape variety, Tempranillo (80%) combined with Cabernet Sauvignon (20%).
Reserva Especial 2016 is a stunning blend of the 1996, 1998 and 2002 vintages of Vega Unico. The 1996 vintage of Unico has been awarded 96 points and is considered an ‘icon vintage’; the 1998 was awarded 98 points – famed for ‘violets, Asian spices, mineral, blueberry, and assorted black fruits.’ The youngest vintage, the 2002, has been awarded 95 points – an excellent Unico which displays ‘a touch of honey and melted dark chocolate.’ (Wine Advocate)
Reserva Especial is extremely rare and hard to source, its production is less than 1/6th of Unico, this year they have produced 1,500 cases. As such it outperforms Unico for investment, it is a favourite in leading restaurants around the world and amongst collectors. There is not enough to go around and it rises in price displaying a healthy vintage premium, as can be seen from the table below.
The 2016 is another wonderful blend and triumph for Vega Sicilia, who still consider this as their flagship wine. It has been awarded 95 points and for £530 it is the lowest priced vintage on the market. With such a small production and global recognition Vega Sicilia’s Reserva Especial is one of the great wines of the world which has very little availability in older vintages. As new markets begin to enjoy its incredible complexity; global supply will be pushed to the limit.

The NV 2016 Único Release Reserva Especial is a blend of different harvests looking for a consistent style. In the case of the wine that will be sold in 2016, it’s a blend of 1996, 1998 and 2002. The nose is complex, reminiscent of the regular Único, with some herbal undertones, plenty of spices and something earthy, starting to develop some more complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with lively acidity (I think it blends three vintages that were above the average in acidity), but does not show the depth and elegance of the 2015 release…‘ Drink 2015-2030
