Following the huge demand for the 2006 Taittinger Comtes Blanc de Blancs magnums last year, we are delighted to offer the 2006 Taittinger Comtes Rose magnums, which have just been released onto the market. Taittinger magnums are incredibly rare with many past vintages simply unavailable. This offers an interesting opportunity for investment as the comparatively low entry point provides considerable appreciation potential. 2006 was an incredible vintage for Champagne, especially for Rose, which should increase demand. This is reflected in the glowing tasting notes written by Antonio Galloni and James Suckling, both of whom have awarded the wine 95 points.

Taittinger Comtes is a favourite of IG Wines; a beautiful prestige cuvee which is considerably lower in price than some of the other leading prestige Champagnes. Taittinger magnums on release are almost half the price of most prestige cuvee Roses. Prestige cuvees in magnum normally command a huge premium compared to normal sized bottles, largely due to their low production: Taittinger remains much closer to the bottle price as can be seen in the table below.

Taittinger Comtes has come to the fore as a highly investable Champagne. Our enthusiasm for the Blanc de Blancs on this front has been well documented and the Rose is rarer still. As demonstrated in the table below, magnums of Taittinger Comtes Rose display a healthy vintage premium.

According to the head winemaker at Tattinger, Loic Dupont, the 2006 is a tremendous vintage, “the closest stylistic comparison to emerge since the 2002.” Galloni agrees that it measures up to the legendary 2002, giving both the same score of 95 Points. Given that the 2002 magnums trade at twice the price that we are releasing today, this shows great promise for the 2006 as an investment.

The Comtes Rose 2006 is assembled with 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, sourced exclusively from Grand Cru vineyards in Bouzy and the Cote des Blancs respectively. Only the clearest juices from the first pressing are used, to maintain the wine’s elegance, while 15% of the Pinot Noir is made fully into red wine which gifts the Champagne an impressive structure and complexity. Aged for at least 8 years in Taittinger’s cellars under Reims, it boasts a finesse and depth that far exceed its low price point.

With a miniscule production and by far the best value among prestige cuvee Rose in magnums, the Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Rose 2006 is a true collector’s item and comes highly recommended. We have a restricted quantity available and it will clear from the primary market quickly as demand far exceeds supply, so we would recommend stocking up now.

95 Points, James Suckling
Take Taittinger’s prodigious Chardonnay and add 15% Pinot Noir to create this masterful prestige rosé that has a mid-red hue and plenty of assertive pinot red fruits on the nose. Really impressive aromas of Turkish delight, cherries, chalky minerals and pink grapefruit. The palate has a fine core with some bolder red fruit flavors and Pinot Noir weight. Really impressive, deep and even, with much to come if you hold for three to five years before drinking.

95 Points, Antonio Galloni
Taittinger’s 2006 Comtes de Champagne Rosé has come along nicely over the last six months. Intensely perfumed, Pinot-inflected aromatics carry through the mid-palate and finish as the 2006 shows off its depth and pure energy. Veins of chalky minerality give the red berry and cranberry flavors an extra kick of energy. The 2006 is both powerful and delicate at the same, with crystalline precision and fabulous depth. Hints of orange peel, mint, cinnamon and cranberry add further shades of nuance on the complete, beautifully articulated finish.
