Robert Parker has proclaimed that ‘2013 for many wineries in Napa and Sonoma has produced the finest wines I have tasted in 37 years.’  It is hardly surprising therefore that Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars have produced their highest ever acclaimed wine, with the extraordinary 97+ point scoring Cabernet Sauvignon Cask 23. Antonio Galloni concurs, saying ‘The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon CASK 23 is another total knock-out from Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars.’ The score of 97+ from Parker surpasses their 96 point scoring 2012, 1992 and 1991. Today’s release price is £745 in bond per case of six bottles or £124 per bottle, excellent value in the context of the leading Napa wines in 2013: Screaming Eagle has been awarded the same score and costs £9,000 per case of six. Only 1,500 cases of Cask 23 are produced per year and only in vintages where the fruit is considered exceptional. As such, there is a shortage of supply in the market and prices rise quickly after only a few years, the 94+ 2009 and 89 point scoring 2008 already trade at £1,050 and £1,200 respectively per case of six bottle.

Stag’s Leap Winery is amongst the greatest and most iconic estates in Napa Valley. If Napa Valley had a classification of First Growth, Stags Leap would be one of the five, after being etched into the history books. In 1976 at the Judgement of Paris, the leading wines of California were pitted against the great wines of Bordeaux. There, a famous panel made up of some of France’s leading wine names tasted the best Californian wines against some of the best from France. The red category included 1971 Chateau Haut Brion, Mouton Rothschild, Leoville Las Cases and Montrose. Stag’s Leap S.L.V shocked the wine world by finishing in first place, which resulted in it being placed in the front pages of Time Magazine. Decanter Magazine described it as a ‘victory that put California on the winemaking map, and established Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars as a global superstar’. A bottle of 1973 S.L.V can now been found in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.

Cask 23 is the Estate’s flagship wine, the pinnacle of its winemaking. Cask 23 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon fruit from the S.L.V and Fay vineyards. The Fay vineyard was purchased in 1986 and is the oldest Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard in the area. The first vintage of Cask 23 was produced in 1974 when Warren Winiarski noticed serendipitously that one cask, number 23, stood out from all other casks with regards to taste. Cask 23 combines the signature perfume of the Fay vineyard seamlessly with the structure and minerality of the S.L.V.

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Cask 23 is backward, but concentrated, with beautiful blue, red and black fruits, spring flowers, a touch of toasty oak, relatively noticeable tannin and a full-bodied, multi-layered mouthfeel. This is coiled tight compared to the 2012, but has fabulous upside potential. Forget it for another 3-4 years and drink it over the following 25-30 years.

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon CASK 23 is another total knock-out from Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars. Sculpted and nuanced, the 2013 presents a striking mélange of typical Stags Leap notes. Violets, lavender, mint, cloves, graphite and dark spice are some of the signatures in a Cabernet that achieves a compelling balance of power, finesse and overall intensity. This tightly coiled Cabernet is going to need a few years to fully come together, but it is terrific and a great example of what Stags Leap Cabernets are all about.
