The first wine is none other than San Filippo Brunello di Montalcino Le Lucere Riserva 2012, a wine that received 100 points in 2010 from James Suckling. Their standard Le Lucere was awarded 100 points in 2015 and the Riserva is another step-up. The former is aged for six years after harvest with over two years in oak. It is selected from their oldest and most exceptional vines, the acme of the Estate. It is produced in minuscule quantities and released in cases of three bottles so there is enough to go around, although this is rumoured to be less than 300 cases in total. In 2012 it has received 98 points from James Suckling, who announces ‘Wow. This is really fantastic with outstanding depth of fruit and ripe and silky tannins. So much blueberry and cedar character with hints of flowers’. The lowest market price for a case starts at £300 under bond. We can offer it today at £250 per case of three, a 17% discount to market. The second wine is their San Filippo Brunello di Montalcino 2014. It is a very smart buy, with some of the grapes normally reserved for Lucere and Lucere Riserva used in this cuvee. Indeed, it undergoes 28 months in barrel and then a year in bottle to achieve the highest possible integration. The production here is minuscule also, with around 1,200 cases made, artisanal, boutique and focused. In 2014 it has been awarded 93 points from James Suckling who says ‘There’s beautiful sangiovese character in the nose here with dried flowers, cherries and violets. Subtle and enticing’. While Ian D’Agata of Vinous Media awards it 92, noting ‘The pristine nose offers hints of violet, pomegranate, red cherry and minerals.’ We can offer it today for £165 per case of six, a massive 20% discount to the lowest global price and less than £30 a bottle. The San Filippo Estate is situated in a splendid area to the east of Montalcino, where the most elegant and best ageing wines of the entire Brunello district are produced. The Estate extends over approximately 22 hectares, with 11 under vine, where the principal varieties grown are Sangiovese, Merlot and Syrah, and about one and a half hectares of olive groves. Founded in 1972, the Estate was purchased in 2000 by Roberto Giannelli, who has restored and renovated all the buildings and outdoor areas of the wine resort.
The terroir wraps around the slopes: the northern which produce incredibly elegant and aromatic wine, while those on the southern slopes are powerful and rich. The synthesis creates the stunning balance and power which allows the wine to age for 30 years plus. At the same time, Roberto has also reorganised the wine production, drawing on the experience of his trusted wine makers and vinification technicians. The modern and functional cellars extend over a covered surface area of over 1,000 square meters. They comprise a vinification cellar, an area for refinement and a sector for the bottling, packaging and storage of the wines. The ageing cellar is instead located in the basement of the old farmhouse.
San Filippo released its first vintage in 1977 and is sited very close to Biondi Santi, in Northern Montalcino.
