We are delighted to be able to offer the NEW VINTAGE of La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904, the 2004, which has been scored 96 points by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (Luis Gutierrez). The initial release price is £145 for cases of six bottles and we are able to offer a promotional price of £135 per case on orders of three cases or more.
The 2004’s score of 96 points means that it is only equalled by the 1964 and the last release the 2001. La Rioja Alta 904 offers some of the best value of any of the world’s greatest wines and at £24 a bottle in bond, (£31 duty and VAT paid) means it has a Price Per Points score/ratio of 9.06. Luis Gutierrez confirms its evident value saying, ‘At this quality level the price is superb especially considering that the wine is being released 10 years after the vintage.’ If you like Rioja, or just great wine, Rioja Alta 904 Gran Reserva is a wine to buy in every vintage they release.

The Grand Reservas are only made in exceptional vintages and are considered to be the pinnacle of Rioja today; Gutierrez aptly states, ‘They have always been hugely popular in Spain, but they seem to be selling their wines faster and don’t produce every cuvee in every vintage and as a result had very few new wines to show.’ Only 150,000 bottles were filled in 2004 and its rapidly growing global popularity is stretching production, we advise all wine lovers to stock this truly superb wine.

La Rioja Alta
La Rioja Alta is one of the benchmarks for traditional Rioja. The Estate is celebrated for its Grand Reservas 904 and 890; the 890 is named after the genesis of La Rioja Alta in 1890. The Estate begun in earnest in 1890 founded on the very spot where the head office is located today. Like most great winemakers La Rioja Alta remain true to traditional practices, while integrating beneficial modern variances on the winemaking leitmotif. Their two wineries complement each other perfectly: The Haro winery is cited in the Station District and embodies the full flavour of traditional Rioja winemaking and the facility is perfect for ageing wines. The modern facility in Labastida was built specifically to provide the perfect environment for maximising the fermentation process.

The 360 hectare vineyards are located in the very best parts of Rioja Alta which boast limestone soil, in the subzones of Rodezno, Labastida, Briones, Cenicero and Fuenmayor. In addition they have a 63 hectare estate in Tudelilla in Rioja Baja to maximise the growth of Garnacha. La Rioja Alta harvest 5,000 kg/hectare, 24% less than the maximum adhered to across the region, resulting in very high quality fruit. 80% of the vines are trellis-trained and the remaining 20% are goblet trained.

After smooth alcoholic and malolactic fermentation the wines were transferred to four year old American oak barrels, which the Estate make in house, then racked by the barrel-to-barrel method every six months.

Luis Gutierrez, The Wine Advocate – 96 points
This 2004, from a superb vintage shows a beautiful light red color with a brick rim and a superb nose redolent of balsamic woods, spices, leather, well-hung meat, incense and truffles. The light to medium-bodied palate shows fully resolved tannins, great acidity and pure, pungent flavors that linger in the mouth forever and that can only be Rioja. This is a wine to smell over and over again. It might sound like an exaggeration, but this wine is still too young and you should wait a little bit and drink the superb 2001 vintage which should still be available on the market while this one matures in bottle. At this quality level the price is superb especially considering that the wine is being released 10 years after the vintage. Drink 2016-2024.
