The 2016 vintage in the Southern Rhone is viewed as the greatest in living memory. Today we are elated to be able to offer not one, but two of the finest cuvees of the vintage from Chateauneuf-du-Pape’s Pierre Usseglio, an estate which is considered, “not only one of the top addresses in Châteauneuf-du-Pape but in all of France as well” according to Rhone aficionado Jeb Dunnuck. This translates as two perfect scoring wines dual 100 points scores from one Estate. Quite frankly a remarkable feat!

The first spellbinding cuvee Mon Aieul Chateauneuf-du-Pape is comprised of 100% Grenache from vines which were planted over a century ago in parcels of the lieux-dits of La Guigasse, Le Crau and Les Serres which yield a decadently rich and complex wine with vibrant aromatics and a myriad of bramble fruit and exotic spices. Such pedigree and lineage in a legendary vintage has resulted in a perfect 100 points from Dunnuck, who raved about it to his readers as “a deep, rich yet vibrant red that offers a kaleidoscope of kirsch liqueur, garrigue, crushed flowers, Asian spices, and cured meats. It’s more opulent and sexier than the 2010, fresher and purer than the 2007, has deep, full-bodied aromas and flavors, and a huge finish. It’s a sensational, heavenly Châteauneuf-du-Pape that tops out my scale.” It is available today at the price of £360 per case of six, a significant discount compared to the current market prices of the 2007 and 2010 vintages, which are considered to be in the same league as the superb 2016 as per the chart below.

The 2016 Cuvée Mon Aieul is certainly in the very top tier of the vintage for Chateauneuf-du-Pape, but we have also managed to secure a small parcel of the most extraordinary wine produced from this dynamite estate, their 2016 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Not For You. This is only the third time the winery has taken the decision to save one single 300-litre barrel of Mon Aieul specifically from the oldest vines located on Les Grandes Serres lieu-dit, allowing it to ferment to dry over a two year period resulting in just 400 bottles of a seriously high octane and extraordinary wine. The 2016 vintage has also received a perfect 100 point score from Dunnuck who found it “offers an incredible bouquet of kirsch, blackberries, incense, white flowers, garrigue and spice that develops beautifully with time in the glass. Rich, powerful, full-bodied, and concentrated, it nevertheless glides over the palate with no weight, ultra-fine tannins, and a singular, exotic, lengthy style.” There are currently no bottles available on the global market for the previous 2007 and 2010 vintages such is the incredible rarity of this uber-cuvée which incredibly we are able to offer to you today both in individual OWC bottles and magnums at the price of £235 and £480 IB respectively. This is the ultimate collector’s item, which will soon disappear entirely into savvy collectors cellars.

History of the Estate
Domaine Pierre Usseglio was founded in 1948 by Pierre’s father Francis who moved to the Rhone Valley by way of Italy. Since 1999, Pierre’s children Jean-Pierre and Thierry have managed this family run winery which today spans 25 hectares of vineyards across 17 different parcels within Chateauneauf-du-Pape, including one hectare which is used to produce a white Chateauneuf-du-Pape. In most vintages, Usseglio produces three red Chateauneuf-du-Pape cuvees including their classic 80% Grenache blend with vines of 30-75 years of age, their Cuvée Mon Aieul which debuted in 1998 from the oldest 100% Grenache vines on the estate, and the Reserve des Deux Freres, a more modern new-oak influenced style of old vine Grenache, which was first produced in 2000. The Reserve des Deux Freres is an homage to Pierre and his brother Raymond who left his father’s estate in 1960 to set up his own eponymous domaine which still exists today as another producer of excellent Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Robert Parker of The Wine Advocate has been an ardent fan of these wines over the last two decades including naming the brothers Thierry and Jean-Pierre Usseglio as The Wine Advocate wine personalities of the year in 2001.
