This morning sees the release of Taittinger Comtes Rose 2007, priced at £590 per case of six. The 2007 has been scored 97 points from Antonio Galloni, making it their highest scoring modern vintage, out-stripping the recent 94 point scoring 2004 and the 95 scoring 2002 which trade at £700 and £930 per case of six, respectively. The 2007 bests the 93 scoring 1996 and the 95 scoring 1995 which trade at £1,600 and £1,500 respectively, per case of six. This strongly suggests that Taittinger Comtes displays a strong vintage premium and rewards collectors a couple of years after release.

Galloni calls the 2007 ‘a total knock-out… This is about as good as it gets. Wow!’, Taittinger Comtes has come to the fore as a highly investable Champagne. Our enthusiasm for the Blanc de Blancs on this front has been well documented and the Rose is rarer still. Taittinger Comtes is a favourite of IG Wines; a beautiful prestige cuvee which is considerably lower in price than some of the other leading prestige Champagnes. This can be seen from the table below, which demonstrates the price and score of the other leading prestige cuvee champagnes from the leading houses. Cristal Rose, which has the same score already trades at £2,100, while Dom Perignon 2006, trades at £1,150, we expect the 2007 release to be higher.

The Comtes Rose 2007 is assembled with 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, sourced exclusively from Grand Cru vineyards in Bouzy and the Cote des Blancs respectively. Only the clearest juices from the first pressing are used, to maintain the wine’s elegance, while 15% of the Pinot Noir is made fully into red wine which gifts the Champagne an impressive structure and complexity. Aged for at least 8 years in Taittinger’s cellars under Reims, it boasts a finesse and depth that far exceeds its low price point.

With a miniscule production and by far the best value among prestige cuvee the Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Rose 2007 is a true collector’s item and comes highly recommended. We have a restricted quantity available and it will clear from the primary market quickly as demand far exceeds supply, so we would recommend stocking up now.

We continue to view the leading prestige champagnes as undervalued relative to quality, which holds true for Comtes Rose. We forecast strong growth over the next five years for the leading prestige champagne cuvees and today’s release offers the opportunity to secure one of the finest and best priced marquee cuvee on the market, at first tranche release price. Either as an investment or future consumption, Comtes Rose is a strong buy on release, a wine Galloni says ‘will leave readers weak at the knees.’
