Today we are delighted to release two of the finest wines in Italy: San Filippo Le Lucere 2013 and Le Lucere Riserva 2012, two of the highest perennial scoring wines from Brunello. Le Lucere 2013 has been awarded 94+ from Ian D’Agata and 96 points from James Suckling. San Filippo Brunello di Montalcino Le Lucere is their single vineyard and one of the elite Brunellos. The ‘Le Lucere’ vineyard is a selection of the highest plots in San Filippo, cited at between 270 to 310 meters above sea level. This vineyard skirts around the eastern hills of Montalcino in one of the very best locations, where the clay intermingles with marl and limestone. The wine is fermented in a blend of stainless steel, wood and cement before spending two years in French barriques. The market price today for the 2013 is £300 per case of six, however, we are delighted to be able to offer a first tranche allocation of at £225 per case of six, a 25% discount on release. This offers brilliant value for a single vineyard wine, which incidentally is half the price of the 2010, which trades at £450 per case! The average production is around 600 cases, the attention to each vine of the vineyard is incredible, which translates to complexity, tension and focus in the bottle.

In addition, we are very pleased to be able to offer the very special Le Lucere Riserva, which has an average production of 300 cases. Brunello di Montalcino Riservas are released in only the finest vintages and spend a sixth year at the Estate compared to the five years for the Brunello di Montalcino ‘normales’. This pre-release allows you the chance to secure a case before the general release and own a truly remarkable wine. Le Lucere Riserva is a single vineyard Riserva and therefore represents incredible focus and precision. We are delighted to be able to offer this today at £485 per case of six. This first tranche allocation represents a 19% discount to the market price of £600. The 100 point scoring 2010 from James Suckling trades today at £900 per case of six, he has already awarded the 2012 98 points. Therefore with a 19% discount to market, £80 per bottle for a 98 point scoring single vineyard Riserva, which produces only 300 cases a year, is a superb offering.

The San Filippo Estate is situated in a splendid area to the east of Montalcino, where the most elegant and best ageing wines of the entire Brunello district are produced. The Estate extends over approximately 22 hectares, with 11 under vine, where the principal varieties grown are Sangiovese, Merlot and Syrah, and about one and a half hectares of olive groves. Founded in 1972, the Estate was purchased in 2000 by Roberto Giannelli, who has restored and renovated all the buildings and outdoor areas of the wine resort. The terroir wraps around the slopes: the northern which produce incredibly elegant and aromatic wine, while those on the southern slopes are powerful and rich. It is the synthesis which creates the stunning balance and power which allows the wine to age for 30 years plus. At the same time, Roberto has also reorganised the wine production, drawing on the experience of his trusted wine makers and vinification technicians. The modern and functional cellars extend over a covered surface area of over 1,000 m2. They comprise a vinification cellar, an area for refinement and a sector for the bottling, packaging and storage of the wines. The ageing cellar is instead located in the basement of the old farmhouse.

Brunello di Montalcino has been viewed as one of the pillars of great Italian winemaking, all the while being considered superior to all other Tuscan wine, from the early 19th century. By 1879 it was established that the famous Brunello grape was the great Sangiovese, locally known as Brunello from the diminutive of Bruno (brown). Only Biondi Santi produced wine unbroken until the 1960s, with the reputation of the wines growing internationally, leading to a large influx of farmers and in 1980 the region being awarded the first DOCG status in Italy. San Filippo released its first vintage released in 1977, very close to Biondi Santi, in Northern Montalcino. Today Brunello di Montalcinos are considered among the very finest in the world, yet, offer remarkable value, Le Lucere and Le Lucere Riserva are among the very finest, from this truly great appellation.
