New Release – Louis Jadot Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru 2017, 6×75, £870, 93-95 Pts

Neal Martin has just released his Vinous Media Burgundy 2017 report, calling it a ‘A Modern Classic…a vintage that is traditional, yet thoroughly modern.’ Among the finest wines in the vintage in his opinion are Jadot Clos St Denis, which has received 95-97 (the same score as DRC Romanee Conti 2017), Jadot Bonnes Mares 94-96 and Jadot Chapelle Chambertin 93-95. The latter is by far the lowest priced, which we are delighted to release today for £870 per case of six, brilliant value for a Grand Cru of this prestige and acclaim. This has, over recent years, become a perennial must buy due to its high scores and price. Once again, in 2017 the high quality has shone through, awarded the same score as in 2015 and 2016, a superb 93-95 points from Neal Martin. The fact that it is considered by Martin as their equal, two of the finest vintages of the century, speaks volumes.

Maison Louis Jadot needs little introduction as one of the biggest owners and Domaines in Burgundy. They produce the full plethora of wines, including most of the leading Grand Cru plots. No plot more so than their Domaine Chapelle Chambertin. Chapelle Chambertin lies directly underneath Clos de Beze, where the soil takes on a pebbly, hard rock consistency, which is richer than the neighbouring Grand Cru, Griotte Chambertin. The vineyard is 5.49ha, producing only 22,000 bottles and Louis Jadot produce on average less than 250 cases.

Over the last 10 years, Jadot’s Chapelle Chambertin has become one of the best performing reds of the Cote de Nuits, the 2002 and 2010 were awarded 97-99 and 94-96 points and more recently in 2012 and 2014, 95 and 94-96 from the Wine Advocate; even the sweltering 2003 was awarded 95 points. In fact, it competes with numerous other leading names, which have or will release at far higher prices. This is demonstrated in the table below, where Louis Jadot Chapelle Chambertin 2017 trades at a large discount to the other leading wines at the same qualitative price point.

There is a material shortage of Grand Cru and leading 1er Cru Burgundy in the market. The leading plots, which generally have small potential production, are separated by producers into smaller parcels. Their output barely serviced the US and old Europe, but with the introduction of Asia in recent years, demand has comfortably outstripped supply. Moreover, Burgundy production is on a descending trend. As such, with very little stock in the rear-view mirror and a narrowing road ahead, Jadot’s Chapelle Chambertin offers great relative value, an ever-increasing presence among the best scoring Red Burgundies. With said production, we are delighted to be able to offer this today, which with this score is one of the must have red wines of the 2017 vintage.
