On Thursday last week, Neal Martin released his Vinous Media Burgundy 2017 report, his first on Cote d’Or En Primeur since leaving the Wine Advocate. He describes 2017 as ‘A Modern Classic…a vintage that is traditional, yet thoroughly modern.’ The whites in 2017 are being remarked as being on par or perhaps better than 2014, in a word, exceptional. However, Martin says ‘The 2017 reds are very good, often excellent, and from time to time, bloody awesome.’ One of the highest scoring reds is Louis Jadot Bonnes Mares, awarded an exceptional 94-96 points. This makes it the joint highest scoring Bonnes Mares in 2017. It far surpasses Martin’s score for the 2016, an exceptional vintage and the 2005, another classic. It is the same score as the 2015, which trades today at £1,050 per case of three. Of the 2017, Martin says ‘This is an excellent Bonnes-Mares from Jadot – in fact, one of the best I have tasted in this vintage.’

As can be seen from the table below, the value proposition for Louis Jadot 2017 is exceptional. Priced at £712.50 per case of three, this Bonnes Mares offers immense value compared to its peers, with the highest score, the lowest price by considerable distance and resultantly, the lowest Price over Points ratio. The company it outstrips such as Roumier, Mugnier and de Vogue when compared to the price, designates this as one of the buys of the vintage.

Bonnes Mares is one of the highest prizes in the Cote d’Or and prices across all producers are rising quickly as collectors worldwide look to secure ‘Bonnes Mares’. It is a magical Grand Cru, that demonstrates the ability to blend two distinct characters into a single personality: that of Morey-Saint-Denis and Chambolle-Musigny. The vineyard is sited to the south of Clos de Tart, with more of the vineyard located in Chambolle-Musigny than in Morey-Saint-Denis. It has an easterly exposition, boasting altitudes of 250-280 metres. Its rich, fleshy and voluptuous mouth-feel makes it one of the greatest plots in the world.

Louis Jadot has a superb plot in Bones Mares and perennially produces a superb wine loved by the critics. It is also the best priced among all Bonnes Mares plots on release, as can be seen from the table above. Jadot’s real-estate reflects a long plot, found in the very centre of Bonnes Mares, a prime location.

Louis Jadot Bonnes Mares is a treasure and in 2017 it is one of the wines of the vintage. It is undervalued compared to other Bonnes Mares producers and in 2017 is the Bonnes Mares of the vintage. We recommend it every year, on an allocation basis. The 2017 has seen a slight rise in production and as such we are pleased to offer it out subject to availability. This is a wine to secure an allocation of and to buy year on year!
