Leoville Las cases is the foremost wine in St. Julien and is unquestionably among the leading Estates anywhere, producing wine of First Growth quality. Since 2014, each Las Cases have become contenders for the wine of the vintage. In 2018, they have delivered again, producing a truly magnificent wine, which has been awarded 98-100 points from Lisa Perrotti-Brown of The Wine Advocate who calls it ‘Simply breathtaking.’ This score is echoed by James Suckling who awards it 99-100 points, stating ‘OMG… The château says 2016 plus, plus.’ Jeb Dunnuck also scores it 98-100 points and remarks it is ‘A candidate for the wine of the vintage.’ Its release price today is £2,172 per case of 12, or £1,086 per case of six. This puts it in line with the 2016 release, with a small adjustment for a change in FX, except it has three potential perfect scores, uniform recognition of its brilliance and flirtation with perfection. The 2016 was also awarded 98-100 points from The Wine Advocate and was subsequently awarded a perfect score. As with the 2018, it could become one of the great Bordeaux wines, it is that sublime, more succulent and velvetier than the 2016.

Unique for the Médoc, the vineyards of Las Cases are mainly laid out in one block. The walled Grand Clos that borders Château Latour at the north of the St Julien appellation makes up half of the Las Cases Estate and the gate of the Grand Clos vineyard is featured on the wines label. In the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855, there were no Premier Cru wines from the St Julien appellation. Château Léoville Las Cases has been its strongest contender for many decades to be reclassified.
