Haut Brion consistently releases at the same price as Mouton Rothschild and Margaux each vintage, however, we are pleased to reduce this 6.1% to £4,055, a 16% reduction on the release price of the 2016 and a 27% discount to the current trading price of the 2015. In 2017 Haut Brion is collectively praised by the critics, awarded 95-97 from the Wine Advocate, 95-96 from James Suckling and 94-96 from Neal Martin who calls it ‘a great follow-up to the brilliant 2015 and 2016.’ It is also awarded 94-96+ from Jeb Dunnuck, who says it is The top wine, and unquestionably one of the wines of the vintage’ and Antonio Galloni awards it 93-96, saying the ‘phenomenally long finish is a thing of real beauty.’ This reflects a splendid effort and is largely possible due to the fact production has been reduced 40%, this equates to just over 5,500 cases, so it is one of the smallest ever vintages from the Estate. This will impact global distribution and the 2017 vintage is likely to be one with far smaller liquidity in five to ten years, due to the greatly reduced cases on the market. For those with a vertical collection since 2014, the 2017 is a wonderful culmination of a brilliant run of quality at Haut Brion.

Haut Brion is the only First Growth found outside of the Medoc, it is located in Graves in central Bordeaux. As the name suggests the top vineyards in this commune boast abundant gravel. Haut Brion and La Mission Haut Brion also have more sand in their vineyards than the Haut Medoc, accounting for the higher degree of Merlot planted and enhanced harmony and elegance of the wine. In the early 20th Century, Clarence Dillon, an American banker acquired Haut Brion. Dillon’s great-grandson, Prince Robert of Luxembourg is the current custodian.  Most vintages are medium bodied, its richness and power on the palate balance beautifully with its trademark distinctive tobacco flavour common to Graves. Haut Brion is famed for its smoky spice flavours and can be recognised by a distinct aroma of truffles and fine Havana Cigar.

La Mission Haut Brion 2017 continues a run of truly stellar form for the Estate, scoring 95-97 from the Wine Advocate. This morning’s release price of £2,760 or £1,380 per case of six, reflects a 28% discount to the release price of the 2016, one of the largest we have seen during the campaign. It is also a 19% discount to the current trading price of the 2015. La Mission Haut Brion 2017 has been awarded 95-96 from James Suckling and 93-95 from Neal Martin who says ‘I can see Jean-Philippe Delmas’s comparison with the 2001 though I find the tannins finer in the 2017. Superb.’ Once again, reduction had been greatly reduced to ensure the highest possible quality meaning less than 4,000 cases were made.

La Mission Haut Brion has been owned by Domaine Clarence Dillon, owners of Haut Brion since 1983. However, despite the coming together of the two properties, Jean-Bernard and later Jean-Philippe Delmas, who oversaw the winemaking for both properties, managed to maintain La Mission’s unique identity that has led to its wines attracting much critical acclaim.
