This afternoon we are delighted to release El Enemigo Gran Enemigo Gualtallary 2014, the highest scoring wine in Luis Gutierrez’s most recent Wine Advocate report, Argentina: 2016 – The Sky is the Limit. Gran Enemigo surpasses all other wines in this report spanning both the 2013 and 2014 vintages with a stunning 98 points. Of it Gutierrez says, ‘with power and freshness in a rare combination of clout and elegance only the very best wines manage to show.’ The wine is simply brilliant, it combines the Uco Valley’s (Mendoza) superb terroir and climate and the region’s leading winemakers to make a 100% Cabernet Franc masterpiece. The Price Over Points ratio (POP) is remarkable, with a score of 31. It is extremely rare to have a Wine Advocate scoring wine above 98 points with a POP score under 50, normally the price increases exponentially in line with scores over 98. Indeed, the Estate has already received one perfect score, recently for the 2013 – which trades today at £475 per case of six. The table below reflects how well priced this is on release today!

Indeed, when compared to the other leading wines from said report, the value jumps out further, today’s release price reflecting a large discount to market. Production is also extremely rare with only 250 cases of 12 bottles made; such high scores year on year, combined with minuscule production suggests it is worth stocking up now.

El Enemigo is the ground-breaking venture formed by Adrianna Catena, the youngest daughter of Nicolas Catena, and Alejandro Vigil, the Chief Winemaker of Bodega Catena Zapata for the last 13 years. Nicolas Catena Zapata remains at the forefront of the vanguard of Argentinian Malbec, his pioneering vision has elevated the region’s wines worldwide. He introduced European viticultural techniques to Argentina, including French oak barrels, drip irrigation and low yield cutting of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay – devoting himself to perfecting high altitude vine growing.

El Enemigo represents the passion and vision of their new generation, a continuation of innovation and drive for excellence, their leading wine Gran Enemigo Gualtallary is a single vineyard plot, located in Tupungato, the Northernmost sub-region of the Uco Valley in Mendoza. The sub-region boasts incredible altitude, with its very own volcano, which erupted in 1987; as such the soil abounds with deep Calcareous matter perfect for growing Malbec and Cabernet Franc at high altitude, 1430 metres in the case of the Gualtallary vineyard.

The family also consider Gualtallary to be the new Eldorado, capable of Grand Cru level vineyards that can compete with the greatest wines in the world. Adrianna and Alejandro have chosen to utilise such a high preponderance of Cabernet Franc in honour of an old Pomerol style and with 98 points it competes with the greatest wines of Pomerol. Gutierrez says of Gran Enemigo that ‘this reminded me of my favorite Bordeaux, Lafleur, because of the elegance, the refinement of the tannins and length. It has citric, effervescent acidity that makes you salivate.’

If you want to own the finest wines from around the world this is a must have wine; if you love great Argentinian this is for you, if you love Pomerol then fill your boots. In fact, it is hard to find a reason not to buy this 98 point wine which costs under £47 a bottle!
