We closed our en primeur campaign last year with Chateau Ausone, which made a brilliant finish. In 2018 it is a wine that stops one in their tracks, demanding a perfect score. Lisa Perrotti-Brown of The Wine Advocate awards it just that, 98-100 points, describing it as ‘finishing with epic length and heart-stopping beauty’. James Suckling awards it 99-100 points, saying it is an ‘Incredible beauty. Sexy’. Antonio Galloni awards it 97-100 points, stating ‘it is without question one of the wines of the vintage’. Chateau Ausone 2018 is a wine of beauty and class and will surely receive 100 points from bottle.

The release price today is £6,900 per case of 12, or £3,450 per case of six, which we consider very attractive and below our estimate, a rarity in 2018. This offers plenty of potential upside. The 99 point scoring 2016 saw a price rise of 10% since release, trading at £7,850 today. The 99 point scoring 2015 increased 34% from £5,600 to £7,500. The 98+ point scoring 2009 and 2010 trade at £9,800 and £10,600, while the 100 point 2005 trades at £10,800. With a perfect score from bottle the 2018 should see the price eventually rise closer to £10,000, a 99 point score to £7,700 in the short-term. The average trading price since 2005 for a 98+ point scoring or above physical vintage of Chateau Ausone is £9,310. As such today’s release price of £6,900 offers a 25% discount to this indicative price. A 100 point score, which the 2018 is very likely to receive from bottle would result in a 30-40% upside in the short-term, as suggested by the data set. Chateau Ausone 2018 is a remarkable wine, which is offered today at a discount to the other great vintages and one of the finest Ausones ever made!

Chateau Ausone is one of the most iconic wines in the world. It is also one of the oldest, named after the Roman poet Ausonius, who owned the vineyard and another 100 hectares around it. The real estate and terroir is truly remarkable, the vineyard wrapping around the southern illustrious hillside at the top of the village of St. Emilion. As such the soil has a flawless aspect, perfect for drainage and protected from northerly winds. The soil boasts limestone, loam and clay, the perfect conditions for Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The vineyard itself is around seven hectares and production is minuscule with barely 2,000 cases made a year. Chateau Ausone is the most eminent wine in St. Emilion and along with Cheval Blanc is the original Grand Cru Classe A St. Emilion powerhouse.
