We are delighted to have just secured a parcel of Montrose 2008 direct from Bordeaux. Chateau Montrose is a Bordeaux colossus, regarded amongst the very best Chateaux in the world. It is famed for its wonderful deep crimson colour, combining richness and strong firm tannins; complexity, freshness and harmony of fruit. The 2008 vintage is a brilliant buy, it was originally awarded a score of 95-97 from Robert Parker, stating that ‘Château Montrose is a wine that has always possessed first-growth potential.’ In his tasting note Parker alludes to the fact that the 2008 will turn into something very special, putting it in the same category as the 99-point scoring 2003, 100-point scoring 1990 and in particular the 98+ scoring 1989, which trade at £1,750, £6,500 and £5,000 per case respectively; ‘The difference between the 2008 and the 2003, 1990, or 1989 is the freshness and purity of expression. This should be a long-lived wine (35+ years), yet it will drink surprisingly well at a young age.’ Parker’s last tasting note awarded it 95 points, commenting it is ‘One of the superstars of the vintage’. This score and today’s price of £800 for a full case gives it the lowest Price over Points (POP) ratio of any vintage of Montrose with 53.

During the 2014 En Primeur release the Chateau’s owners, brothers Martin and Olivier Bouygues, who come in at number 12 on France’s rich list with 3.7 billion dollars, decided to increase the release price by 34%. At the time we recommend that collectors buy the 2008 for the price then of £630. No vintage since the 2014 has been priced below £1,000 on release. Moreover, £1,000 is the market high of the 2008, seen in 2011; we expect the 2008 to rise above this in the short-term. Indeed, the table below includes any vintage of Montrose with a score of 94 points or above, excluding the 2008 the average price is £2,236 and the average POP score is 123. Montrose 2008 is extremely undervalued, a great buy!

Montrose 2008 is ten years old and drinking perfectly, having entered its drinking window in 2016. The vintage is experiencing strong demand, its 10 year retrospective reviews undertaken early this year, confirming that it is a leading drinking vintage. Chateau Montrose produces First Growth quality wine, which is represented in the price of new vintages and by how brilliantly age-worthy it is. The Estate’s pedigree is once again seen in the 2008, which Parker scored on par with Mouton Rothschild and higher than Chateau Margaux! Priced today at £66 per bottle in bond or £80 duty and VAT paid on your table, this is a rare opportunity to secure a truly super Bordeaux comfortably below £100 a bottle. We expect the 2008 vintage to continue its price correction over the coming years, it is very good market timing to take a position today for investment and brilliant timing for consumption or further cellar ageing, it will improve for another 30 years.
