Today, as we continue with our Burgundy En Primeur campaign, we are delighted to offer an excellent range from one of the most prominent producers in Cote d’Or, Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret. Boasting an enviable collection of Grand Cru and Premier Cru plots, this long established Domaine is known for wines that are intense and concentrated, yet elegant and refined. Their 2019 releases, as noted by William Kelley of The Wine Advocate, are classic Pinot Noirs that “blossom with bottle age into superb examples of their appellations.”

Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Narbantons 2019 is a lush and expressive wine which truly captures the essence of its unique terroir. Sited not far from the famous Corton Grand Cru hill, Les Narbantons often falls under the shadow of the former. However those who know where to look will find volume, power and balance along with excellent value in this lesser known corner of Burgundy. William Kelley admires this Mongeard-Mugneret release for mingling notes of cherries and plums with hints of spices and mandarin rind. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and round, it’s gourmand and generous, with enough powdery tannin to balance out the sucrosity of the ripe vintage.” Les Narbantons vineyard has a northeasterly aspect and receives less exposure to sunlight than other vineyards along the Cote d’Or, which may be difficult in cooler years, but becomes an advantage in hot vintages like the 2019. Everything is in balance in this wine, as described by Allen Meadows of Burghound: “There is fine volume and mid-palate density to the rich and suave medium-bodied flavors that display fine persistence and complexity on the firm and lightly mineral-suffused finish where a touch of austere appears.” Offered at £285 per case of six in Bond it is great value for a Premier Cru Burgundy.

While Mongeard-Mugneret wines are exceptional across the range, the Domaine is primarily famous for their highly sought-after Grand Crus: Richebourg, Echezeaux, Grands Echezeaux and Clos Vougeot. This year for the first time we have managed to secure a small parcel of these highly allocated wines and are delighted to offer them to our clients. Please see the full selection below.

Based in Vosne Romanee, Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret dates back to the 1920s, when two prominent winemaking families became one through the marriage of Eugène Mongeard to Edmée Mugneret. In 1945, their son Jean began estate-bottling the wine and releasing it under the name Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret. Jean’s dedicated work earned international fame for the domaine, while he became one of the most respected winemakers in Burgundy serving as the President of the Association des Viticulteurs de la Cote d’Or for a number of years. Today Jean’s son Vincent runs the estate which encompasses 30 hectares of vineyards in 35 appellations. All parcels are worked sustainably using “la lutte raisonée” approach with a focus on soil health. Fruit is harvested exclusively by hand and manually sorted in the winery. Fermentation begins naturally with indigenous yeasts. The wines are matured in 30-100% new oak, which is carefully sourced in the nearby forests and cured at the domaine. These are incredibly powerful and complex Pinot Noirs capable of ageing for decades.
