The 2013 vintage has now cemented its status a magnificent year for Tuscan wines, stylistically nestling between 2010 and 2007. Masseto 2013 has been awarded 98 points from James Suckling who proclaims it has ‘Aromas of blueberry, violet, and rose that turn to black truffle.’ He goes on to say it is ‘So gorgeous and persistent. It goes on for minutes.’ Monica Larner of the Wine Advocate has awarded it 95 – 97 points, declaring ‘2013 Masseto is shaping up to be a super star.’
Masseto is released on the Place de Bordeaux through negociants; allocations are minuscule, leading to attractive short-term price rises. In 2013 production has been reduced by 15%, stretching the supply further. Moreover, the weak pound will result in a premium for the 2013 vintage. Masseto rises in price immediately after the first tranche release price and today’s release price of £1,075 offers immediate returns, while promising impressive price appreciation in mid-term.

Masseto is located on the Tuscan coast in Bolgheri and was established by the Antinori Family, who are also responsible for Ornellaia. Masseto is a paragon of wine making, found on the hill of Masseto, which is about 120 metres above sea level. Just like Petrus, its clay terroir allows the soil to absorb and store water, aided further by the sea breeze which keeps the terrain perennially cool. This allows the grapes to grow steadily, without stress; a process which allows them to ripen fully under the warm Tuscan sun acquiring an ideal harmony of sugar and phenolic ripeness.
Its parallels with Petrus continue as the Estate mimics Petrus’ low yields; its six hectares produce a maximum of 2,000 cases per year. It is – for all intents and purposes – Petrus grown under the Tuscan sun. Masseto is both rarer and offers better relative value; Petrus produce 5,000 cases per year.

Tasted from barrel, the 2013 Masseto is shaping up to be a super star. This edition of the wine is already more muscular and tight compared to the warm vintage expression in 2011 and 2012. This Masseto instead is linear and balanced with pretty fruit tones that are enhanced by enduring sensations of baking spice, dark chocolate and tobacco. The bouquet delivers the classic aromas you should expect of a Merlot of this high standard. The mouthfeel also shows a tight acidic vein that bodes well for the future evolution of this stunning wine. The tannins are youthful and unyielding but they also show firm structure and balance that serves to support the wine’s rich extract and flavors.
