Today we are delighted to be able to offer you the latest vintage from one of our favourite wines from the legendary Antinori portfolio the 2019 Guado al Tasso Cont`Ugo, second wine of the tremendous Guado al Tasso. Hailing from the same terroir in the heartland of the Super Tuscan coastal region of Bolgheri this wine, Cont’Ugo is 100% Merlot, boasting all the silkiness and fruitiness that this variety can show. Just as with Guado, it’s crafted by Piero Antinori, one of the best known names in Italian wine-making, whose tremendous work has not only gained top scores for his wines, but which has also earned a huge admiration from critics for Piero himself with James Suckling stating, “For me he is the greatest winemaker in Italy, without Piero there would be no history of great winemaking in Italy.” Bolgheri is home to some of the most iconic wines in all of Italy including Ornellaia and Sassicaia, yet available today at just £160 per case of 6 IB, the Cont’Ugo is a mere fraction of the price despite the same unrivalled Antinori lineage and expertise. Additionally, we are able to offer a Special Price of £150 IB which purchasing three or more cases today.

While we are still waiting for critics’ reviews on Cont’Ugo 2018, we can already guess what to expect. The 2018 vintage is poised to be an exceptional one throughout most of Italy, with James Suckling already delivering an early report, “The 2018 vintage for Tuscany appears to be an excellent year for balanced and structured reds with beautifully fresh and fruity center palates as well as a linear line of tannins and acidity” Guado al Tasso has benefitted from its vineyard elevation and the cooling breeze of the Tyrrhenian Sea both which aided contributed to the especially favourable conditions in 2018. For Cont’Ugo these factors have resulted in a wine which is vibrantly coloured in the glass, rich with cherry liquor and sweet and saline spices, and which finishes with lingering velvety tannins and bright acidity. In fact, we loved this wine so much upon trying it that we immediately snapped up every available bottle destined for the UK market, allowing us not only the UK exclusive but also the best market price of ANY vintage currently available in the UK (as demonstrated below) despite 2018 potentially being their very best vintage to date.

The Guado al Tasso estate is located approximately 50 miles to the southwest of the city of Florence near the medieval hamlet of Bolgheri. The property, some 2,500 acres in size, extends from the Tyrrhenian Sea to the inland hills and includes, in addition to the 300 hectares of vineyards, parcels of wheat, barley, hay, and olive groves along with woods in which a herd of Cinta Senese pigs, a prized local breed, graze. Antinori throw the kitchen sink at Cont’Ugo, with the inclusion of a selection of the finest grapes, from a 40 hectare plot planted with Merlot on the Guado al Tasso estate. The grapes are handpicked, with selected bunches then put into temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, where they are macerated on the skin and fermented for 20 days. The fermentation levels are controlled in accord with the ripeness levels of the grapes, ensuring aromatic freshness is maintained, along with great structure. Different parcels are divided and transferred into small oak barrels, one third of which are new. After the malolactic fermentation was completed the finest batches are blended and transferred back into barriques for a further 12-month period of aging, then bottled. Cont’Ugo is then left to age in the bottle for an additional six months before being released.
