We have decided to launch the 2014 Burgundy en primeur campaign with one of our perennial favourites, Chapelle Chambertin from Louis Jadot. Neal Martin has scored Jadot’s offering 94-96 points putting it on par with the 2012 (95 points), 2005 (92-94) and perhaps even the 2002 (97-99). These previous vintages have appreciated rapidly in price demonstrating the value of purchasing on release. Moreover, Jadot’s Chapelle 2014 is the equal highest scoring of the vintage alongside Dugat Py, outscoring Ponsot which trades at double the price.

Chapelle Chambertin lies directly underneath Clos de Beze, where the soil takes on a pebbly, hard rock consistency, which is richer than the neighbouring Grand Cru, Griotte. The vineyard is 5.49ha, producing only 22,000 bottles and Louis Jadot, who along with Ponsot, Damoy, Drouhin-Laroze and Trapet is one of the principal and best properties with a plot of 39a, producing on average less than 1,500 bottles.
Jadot’s 2014 Chapelle Chambertin is superb and offers incredible value for money: Burghound (Allen Meadows) has awarded this wine an average of 93.3 points over the last five vintages, high praise indeed as Meadows is famously miserly with his scoring. Although he is yet to release his scores, we can expect much of the same in 2014.
Considering the huge global demand for top Grand Cru red Burgundy, £100 per bottle for a leading Chambertin vineyard is an outstanding buy. This is a wine to buy now, store for 6-8 years until it can be approached, at which point it be worth £150 a bottle and can be drunk over ten years with immense pleasure, or resold for a healthy profit: it is just a shame so little of it has been made!

The 2014 Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru is maybe the surprise package this year. It comes from very old vines planted in 1921. It has a really quite beautiful bouquet with very pure, mineral-rich wild strawberry and raspberry fruit — precise and wonderfully focused. The palate is crisp and taut on the entry, fresh and tensile but with intense tart red cherry and strawberry fruit fanning out on the finish. Très grand cru! This comes highly recommended.
