With En Primeur in full swing this week, we are delighted to offer another highly anticipated release, Chateau Leoville Las Cases. This “Super Second” Estate of Saint-Julien consistently makes one of the great wines of the vintage and the 2020 is no exception, with Antonio Galloni of Vinous Media calling it “one of the stand outs of the year”. Offered today at £1,188 per case of six of £2,376 per 12 IB the team at Leoville Las Cases have once again produced a wine of First Growth quality but for less than half the price.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown of The Wine Advocate awards the 2020 96-98 points, stating it “is a powerhouse of energy, delivering tightly wound red and black fruits, mineral and floral layers, supported by fantastic tension and incredibly ripe, silt-like tannins”. James Suckling gives it a nearly perfect score of 98-99, calling it “incredibly classic in style” and Antonio Galloni agrees: “a super-classic Saint-Julien that combines mid-weight structure of previous decades, with the greater textural finesse that has become the norm here in recent years,” granting it 95-98 points. Jane Anson of Decanter awards the 2020 Leoville Las Cases 96 points describing it as, “Intellectual, concentrated and reined in for the foreseeable future. You get the full array of serious St-Julien character – pencil lead, cigar box, cassis bud, bilberry, earth and granite-edged tannins, this needs time.” Anson admires the potential of the wine, noting that it “may be upscored once in bottle.”

The walled Grand Clos that borders Château Latour at the north of the Saint-Julien appellation makes up half of the Las Cases Estate and the gate of the Grand Clos vineyard is featured on the wine label. In the Bordeaux Official Classification of 1855, there were no 1er Cru Classe wines from Saint-Julien and Leoville Las Cases was ranked as 2eme Cru Classe. However Las Cases has been the strongest contender for many decades to be reclassified, earning an unofficial status of a “Super Second”, a second growth delivering quality at a first growth level. We recommend buying Las Cases in all the best vintages and the 2020 is certainly one of them.
