With the danger of gilding the lily: 2013 is likely to be the finest vintage ever made in Napa. Today we are delighted to be able to offer the elite three wines of the leading Napa ‘Grand Cru’ winery Kapcsandy, which in 2013 has pushed the envelope of quality to a new level.

The 100% Merlot Kapcsandy Roberta’s Reserve 2013 is considered to be potentially the best wine of the vintage, thus syllogistically, it could be one of the finest wines ever made in Napa. It has been awarded 100 points from Robert Parker who says, ‘Off the charts and could easily eclipse a great vintage of Petrus in a blind tasting…. This wine has greatness all over it,’ Antonio Galloni scores it 100 points calling it a ‘A magnificent towering wine’. The finale is 100 points from James Suckling, who delivers a knockout description, ‘The greatest American merlot ever’. Roberta’s Reserve is unmissable in 2013, although incredibly rare, with only 250 cases being produced. We can offer this today at the incredible market price of £1,150 in bond per case of three bottles, significantly below other first tranche release prices in the UK.

Kapcsandy Grand Vin  in 2013 is a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot. Robert Parker has given it a perfect 100 point score and the accolade, ‘Little can be added to the greatness of the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin…tasting like a ripe vintage of Chateau Latour from Pauillac.’  We can offer this again far below the market lowest price at £1,150 in bond per case of three bottles. Only 600 cases were made.

For dessert, Kapcsandy Estate Cuvee. Parker awards this 97 points; ‘67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot…They made 750 cases of this fabulous wine that is not far from being another perfect example…look for it to evolve for 30 or more years’. Galloni awards it 96 points calling it ‘a wine of exquisite purity and finesse’ and James Suckling scored it 95 points. The price of this near perfect wine is £330 in bond per case of three bottles, the value proposition here is obvious.

Considering these accolades and the minuscule production these are must own wines for collectors, which over the coming years will disappear from the market and are very likely to experience significant positive price adjustment. We are offering the Grand Vin and Roberta’s Reserve £250 per 3x75cl below the best price we have seen offered in the UK market! This makes it extremely investible, offering a superb short-term upside and of course exciting mid and long term returns.

The story of Kapcsandy is described as a classic American one. In 1956 Lou Kapcsandy fled Hungary, following the brutal assault of the Soviet Army during the Hungarian revolution. Lou eventually settled in the San Francisco Bay Area, thereon marrying Roberta Henson and settling in Seattle, Washington in 1973 with their son Louis Junior. Lou began work as a chemical engineer and his love of wine blossomed. He began socialising closely within the wine community, sourcing the finest French wine from a group of professionals and entrepreneurs, many of whom would become the early icons of the Washington State wine industry.

In 1998 the family visited Bordeaux and an afternoon with Michel Delon at Leoville Cas Cases set them on a path which would lead to their own truly great winery. On returning Lou and Bobbie began planning their own vineyard and researching plots. In March 2000, they returned to Bordeaux to taste the 1999 vintage and launched an import business. Then in January 2000 they came across a 20 acre parcel vineyard, which had been ripped out after Phylloxera had destroyed it in 1999. Moving swiftly that summer they closed escrow on this plot, which was the former Beringer Estate State Lane vineyard that had been the home of the Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon program. The family replanted the entire vineyard site into 15 blocks, primarily Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. However, before setting rootstocks they seeded the entire field with safflower-mix, thereon tilling the dirt to encourage and invigorate nutrients. In 2005 they completed a state of the art winery.

The family are self-proclaimed francophiles and Lou compares the wines to Pauillac and Pomerol, focusing on the classic Grand Cru old world style, rather than the paragon of the Napa wines. In fact, they employed the wine consultant Denis Malbec formerly of Chateau Latour, who sadly died in April. Their aim was to constantly produce wines of ‘First Growth’ quality. It is noteworthy that the vineyard is planted with 4-5 times more densely than the average in Napa Valley; 2,640 vines an acre compared to an average of  660. This again was a nod to the First Growths in Bordeaux who plant around 6,500 – 7,000 vines a hectare. This higher density planting produces smaller berries, with a higher skin to pulp ratio, focusing the intense flavours and aromas. Each wine has a distinct character, a unique achievement considering that 100% of the grapes come from the contiguous vineyard sited in Yountville in the heart of the Napa Valley.

At 100% Merlot, the 2013 Merlot Roberta’s Reserve is off the charts and could easily eclipse a great vintage of Pétrus in a blind tasting. Fabulous notes of sweet cocoa and chocolate intermixed with black cherry and blackberry soar from the glass of this full-bodied wine that has a deep, rich, profound core of fruit and density. It is a great example of possibly the finest vintage Napa has ever produced for Bordeaux varieties. This wine has greatness all over it, with a minute-plus finish, yet is accessible enough to be drinkable now or cellared for another 30+ years.

Little can be added to the greatness of the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin, a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot. The wine (600 cases) is truly stunning in its dense, crème de cassis and blackberry-scented nose with a hint of barbecue smoke and forest floor. Tasting like a ripe vintage of Château Latour from Pauillac, the wine has amazing richness and a savory, expansive mouthfeel, but tiptoes across the palate like a ballerina. A wine of magnificent richness and intensity, but vibrancy, purity and overall equilibrium, this is a staggeringly great wine and another tribute to the Kapcsándy family’s extraordinary professionalism and meticulous attention to detail in their vineyard.

The pinnacle for Bordeaux varietals in the 38 years that I have been tasting California wines is 2013. There is just an extra gear in all of the wines, great acids, profound concentration and wonderful integrated tannin and massive concentration that should ensure an incredibly long life for all of the top efforts. In many ways it is a more recent version of 2001. The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Cuvée State Lane Vineyard, 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, spent 20 months in oak prior to being bottled unfiltered. They made 750 cases of it and it is a fabulous wine that is not far from being another perfect example. A classic, almost Médoc-like blend offers up notes of forest floor, blackcurrants, tobacco leaf, a touch of barrique, a saturated purple color, and, once past the gorgeous aromatics, a wine of phenomenal intensity, spectacular texture, length and overall balance. Look for it to evolve for 30 or more years.
