We are very pleased to offer the new release of Ornellaia’s second wine; Le Serre Nuove 2014. Le Serre Nuove is produced from the Estate’s younger vineyards, yet the same care and attention that is given to the Estate’s flagship wine, Ornellaia is also passed on to its second wine. As such, it is no surprise that this younger brother of Ornellaia has fast become a leading Super Tuscan in its own right.
In 2014, the blend consists of 50% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot. According to Axel Heinz, the winemaker at Ornellaia, “A late vintage with a long period of ripening, meant that 2014 presented us with wines that generate a great amount of pleasure”. This is certainly true with the 2014 Serre Nuove, which James Suckling has awarded 91 points, the third highest score that the wine has received to date. Despite the change in FX rates over the last 12 months, we are delighted to be able to offer the 2014 at £145 IB per 6x75cl, which is 6.5% lower than the 2013 release. Furthermore, today’s price stacks up nicely when we compare this with the 91-point 06, 07, 08, and 09 vintages, which average at £205 IB per 6x75cl.
Le Serre Nuove is to Ornellaia what Carruades de Lafite is to Lafite Rothschild. The first vintage of Le Serre Nuove was produced in 1997, the vintage when Ornellaia chose to make further selections during the blending of their first wine. It is chiefly made from younger Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot vines; some of these make it into Ornellaia to give the wine more energy and lift.
Antonio Galloni recently commented that that current vintages of Le Serre Nuove ‘are actually better wines than the early vintages of Ornellaia‘. At £24 IB per bottle or £31.50 per bottle duty and VAT paid, this is not to be missed, as Galloni states “this is about as good as it gets in the fine wine world in terms of price vs. quality”.
Le Serre Nuove 2014, 6x75cl, £145 IB – 91 points, James Suckling
Very pretty texture of lemon rind and fresh tannins with fresh plum and peach undertones. Sweet tobacco. Turns to chocolate. Medium to light body. Drink now.
