Last week Antonio Galloni released his most recent report, ‘Chianti Classico: The Stellar 2015s and Surprising 2014s’. In it he posits the exciting potential of the stunning 2015 vintage, which we will give broad coverage of this year. He also states that while, ‘2014 [sic] will go down as one of the most challenging growing seasons on record in Italy…The high quality of the best 2014s may come as a surprise to some readers.’ Antonio Galloni is known to be an exacting and stringent critic and with Vinous Media now combining some of the world’s leading critics, including Neal Martin, its stock and significance has never been higher. His highest scoring wine in 2014 was Montevertine Le Pergole Torte, which along with Isole e Olena Cepparello received a superb 97 points. We have been trying to secure another parcel since its release, which we are delighted to offer today at £460 per case of six.

This recent score by Galloni makes Pergole Torte 2014 a strong buy, now outscoring higher than the superb 2010 and 2013 vintages. Indeed 97 points is its joint second highest ever score, along with the stellar 2004, which costs £1,050 and besting the 2001, which trades at £1,100, as can be seen from the price comparison below. It also has the lowest Price Over Points Ratio of any vintage, with 54. These are superb indicators that the 2014 is now undervalued and that it will experience a good short-term rise, as it appreciates to reflect its new score and long term as it experiences the result of its natural vintage premium.



The score in 2014 surpasses Solaia and Tignanello which were both awarded 94 points. Unlike Tignanello (85% Sangiovese) Le Pergole Torte is 100% Sangiovese, the wine is vinified in cement tanks, then aged first in French oak and then cask. Production is more akin to Pomerol with only 1,500 cases on average made per year. The purity of fruit is remarkable, it is structured, concentrated and possibly the most refined expression of Sangiovese in the world. It is less rustic and more precise than Tignanello and drinks well young, yet will last for three decades.

In addition, Montevertine Montevertine, also known as Montevertine Rosso, which Galloni describes as ‘a wine of pure finesse’, has received one of its highest ever scores with 93 points, potentially supplanting the 2007 and 2011. Montevertine Rosso is the Estate’s standard bearer derived from a six-acre south-southwest vineyard first planted in 1982. It is made of 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo, a true Chianti Classico, and is aged in Slovenian barrels for two-years. The wine oozes with the class of Pergole Torte at only £30 bottle, representing unbelievable value for money. Buying a case of each allows one to drink the Rosso while you wait for Le Pergole Torte to reach maturity. It is noteworthy that Montevertine Rosso 2015 has been awarded 94-97 points from Galloni, it is magnificent at this price point year on year.

Le Pergole Torte is located in Radda, a district at the very heart of Chianti. Their vineyards are found on the highest altitude in the region, thus benefiting from a cooler temperature which helps the wine retain a wonderful freshness and balance. Taken together, Tignanello and Le Pergole Torte represent the best of the Sangiovese grape, which lends itself well to the warmer weather inland.

Le Pergole Torte continues to be made with the passion and precision laid down by Sergio Manetti, an Italian steel magnate who bought the property in 1967. They maintain a regional typicity, refusing to plant international varieties, expressing Sangiovese with intense character and in terms of its powerful structure it is in a league of its own. Le Pergole Torte is only made in exceptional years and the labels, designed by Alberto Manfredi, vary from year to year. The labels like the wine are exquisite, using a variant of a lady’s profile.

Le Pergole Torte is unquestionably one of the leading Super Tuscans, a genus that has solidified its place among the greatest wines in the world. The wine provides an incredible silkiness, sweet cherries, kirsch, rose petals, spice, cigar box and mint in its youth. With age it develops notes of candy, chocolate, leather, incense and Porcini mushroom.
