Incredibly Rare Selection of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti

Domaine Romanée Conti (DRC) is the finest Estate in Burgundy and its leading wine Romanee Conti the most expensive in the world. Their labels are the most recognisable and revered in the world. All DRCs result from the best plots and the entire production of all Grand Cru DRC comes to 7,560 cases which, when put in perspective is less than 1/3 of that of Lafite Rothschild. Their most famous vineyard, the monopole Romanee Conti, produces less than 450 cases a year, which is stretched bottle by bottle around the world, failing to fulfil demand. This minuscule production is apparent throughout their range, strained to fulfil the demand of collectors who want to own and drink this Estate. Moreover, recent Asian demand, which has been feverous and relentless has accentuated this shortage.

The vineyard Romanee Conti currently has an average bottle price of £10,200, which is eye watering. However, the price rise we have experienced over the last five years has been in line with market averages from leading Burgundy producers, showing a 9% compound annual growth rate over a four year term. Over the last six months the price of Romanee Conti has increased 13% on average across all their vintages running back 1985. Over 12 months 21%, two years 26%, three years 31% and four years 42%. These figures are from secondary market trading prices, not first tranche release, quoted in sterling. It is a similar story with La Tache, having increased 36% over the last three years with a CAGR of 10.5%. DRC Richebourg a CAGR of 11.2%, DRC Romanee Saint Vivant 13.4%, DRC Echezeaux and Grands Echezeaux both 11.2%  and DRC Montrachet 9.5%. It is noteworthy however, that the last six months has seen an acceleration, the other wines gaining ground on Romanee Conti; La Tache, DRC Richebourg and DRC Grands Echezeaux increasing 17%, while Echezeaux has been the best performer with 30%, followed by DRC Montrachet with 24%.

Romanee Conti 
Vosne Romanee is thought of being the greatest Pinot Noir village in world. It is a small village which stands below a long line of reddish earth. The vineyards are found on the mid-slope planted in soil that is extremely rich in clay and lime stone. Here, Domaine Romanee-Conti (DRC) rules as brand supreme and owns two vineyards in their entirety (monopoles), the best of the Côte de Nuit. The average age of vines here is 53 years, and cover only 4.44 acres producing around less than 450 cases of the most sort after wine in the world.

La Tache 
La Tache, Romanee-Conti’s peer and sometimes its superior runs up the left flank after the narrow strip of La Grande Rue. This produces 1,850 cases a year from 14.97 acres, less than Petrus and in greater demand, however, rivalling Romanee-Conti in many vintages.

Richebourg 
DRC are the largest single holders of land amongst the 11 producers in Richebourg. Described as ‘Indisputably the best of the non-monopoly grand cru of Vosne’ by Clive Coates MW, the wines produced by DRC here are generally well structured and opulent. The vines average 45 years old and cuttings were taken from Romanee-Conti itself when replanting occurred just after the War. The Vineyard holding is 3.51 hectares of 18.3 hectares and average production is around 1,000 cases per year.

Romanee-Saint-Vivant 
Romanee-St-Vivant is named after the old abbey of St Vivant and is the closest vineyard to the village of Vosne-Romanee. DRC have managed the 5.28 hectare site from 1966 on behalf of the Marey-Monge family and as owners from 1988 after a rumoured 60 million Franc buy-out. Romanee-St-Vivant is the most feminine of the DRC stable, likened to Romanee-Conti itself due to its complexity and elegant structure. Average production is 1,500 cases per year.

Grands-Echezeaux 
Grand Echezeaux is made up of a triangle of land bordering the southwest corner of Clos-de-Vougeot and its more extensive neighbour Echezeaux. This land used to belong to the Abbey of Citeaux and more recently the Marey family. There are 21 vineyard owners in Grands Echezeaux compared to 80 in Echezeaux and the wine produced here by DRC is more structured and fleshy with a preponderance of black fruit and a gamey flavour. Vineyard holding is 3.52 hectares of 9.14 hectares with an average production of 1,150 cases per year.

Echezeaux 
Echezeaux is a large Grand Cru vineyard where among 80 different owners can be found. As expected, DRC occupies a premium plot within the Grand Cru vineyard. The lack of topsoil and limestone bedrock means grapes ripen easily and the DRC offering is highly rated and in demand. The vineyard holding is 4.67 hectares of 34.79 hectares with an average production of 1,340 cases per year.

Montrachet 
The Montrachet vineyard is just between the communes of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. Here, DRC produce a wine that many consider to be the ultimate expression of the Chardonnay grape variety. The vineyard holding is 0.67 hectares of 1.7 acres with an average production of just 250 cases per year, there is very little to go around, making it highly sought after. It is no wonder the wine can command such high prices. The wine is a classic Chardonnay with elegant mineral undertones, the mix of power and intensity ensures for long term ageing potential.
