Gaja Barbaresco is one of the leading lights of Italy and one of the world’s most recognisable brands. The wine almost single handedly transformed the image of Piedmont. It is considered the first among equals in Italy, even in the company of Sassicaia et al. Today we are delighted to release a small parcel of their new release, the stunning 2013 which promises greatness.

2013 in Piedmonte is promising to be a repeat of the glorious 2004 vintage, with a similar élan to the 2010. Monica Larner of the Wine Advocate states ‘The 2013 vintage is shaping up to be a classic. Many vintners are already comparing it to 2010.’ Antonio Galloni – who adored the 2010 vintage – follows suit ‘Two thousand thirteen is shaping up to be an epic vintage of classic proportions and superb pedigree… The 2013s remind me of the 2010s, but with more inner sweetness and mid-palate richness.’ The 2013 Gaja Barbaresco has not been tasted by any major critic, however, many expect something akin to 2004. This is a vintage to stock up on: with artisanal volume being made every year, the brand prestige and ever increasing global demand, Gaja Barbaresco remains indubitably collectible.

Gaja have a very consistent pricing strategy, providing a little bit of something nice for collectors. It displays a balanced vintage premium and remains half the price of the single vineyards, from where a high proponderance of its grapes are sourced.

Gaja Barbaresco is 100% Nebbiolo sourced from 14 different Barbaresco vineyards, at an altitude between 250 and 330 metres above sea level and covering 21.4 hectares. The grapes from each vineyard undergo separate fermentation and maceration, then spend 12 months ageing in barrique, followed by 12 months in large oak casks. It is renowned for its structure, and elegant tension between the gorgeous acidity and ripe, round tannin. In its youth is displays crushed coffee bean and violets. It rewards cellaring, with age its bursts with flavours of truffles, rose petal and tobacco. Gaja Barbaresco remains the standard bearer for this wonderful winemaker.
