This morning we continue our campaign of the exceptional Barolo 2016 vintage. Today’s release is special, the world beating G.D Vajra, which is a shining light in Barolo. It resonates on a global scale as one of wines masterpieces and it is a personal favourite of the team at IG Wines. G.D Vajra is famed for a signature style which marries classicism with a modern twist, a blend of charm and approachability. As one might expect the 2016 vintage has been used as a canvas to paint their finest ever wines, surpassing even the 2006s and 2010s. Antonio Galloni of Vinous has raved about their wines claiming “The Vaira family has turned out a magnificent set of Barolos”.

Today we are delighted to be able to offer their entire selection of 2016s that reaches its peak with their sensational flagship Bricco delle Viole, which Galloni esteems for its, “Dark red/purplish fruit, hard candy, mint, lavender and sweet spice […] I absolutely loved it” bestowing it with a score of 97 points, one of his top marks for this vintage. It is available today on first release for the price of £345 per case of six IB, a brilliant price. The 2010 and 2006 already trade at £550 per case of six and upwards while the 2016 outstrips both on price.

This is followed by Vajra’s Ravera, which has been scored 96 points from Galloni who describes it as exhibiting “Bright red cherry, mint, white pepper, blood orange and dried flowers give the 2016 brilliant top notes to match its finely sculpted feel,” This can be secured today for £315 per case of six in bond. It is hard to think of two wines at this price point with the prestige and pedigree of Vajra’s Bricco delle Viole and Ravera.

This is completed by their fantastically affordable Barolo Albe. By far the most alluring in this youthful stage, Galloni has awarded it 91 points, highlighting it as, bright, floral and wonderfully lifted in 2016. Sweet tobacco, cedar, blood orange, mint, licorice, dried red cherry and sage give the 2016 lovely savory brightness” We are able to offer it today at the price of £165 per case of six IB and we strongly urge anyone looking to better acquaint themselves with the brilliant wines of G.D. Vajra to pick up a case today. Taken together this is a must own parcel for collectors or investors and as such we can offer a special deal of one case of each for £785.

Founded in 1972 by Giuseppe Domenico Vajra, today the Vajra estate is expertly managed by his son, Aldo Vajra. Located at around 400 metres above sea level, this estate has grown to 60 hectares in size, of which only 10 are planted with Nebbiolo including some of the very best Vineyard sites such as their trademark Bricco dell Viole and their most recent addition in Ravera. Aldo is largely considered a traditionalist in his wine-making techniques with a preference for long ageing in barrel, but he has also adapted a few modern touches such as a careful amount of oak influence, all of which contribute to the trademark pristine and pure aromas and flavours which have made the wines so globally beloved. Antonio Galloni of Vinous has long sung the praises of G.D. Vajra, declaring, “By now I have run out of superlatives for Vajra. Suffice it to say these are some of the finest, artisan wines being made in Piedmont today. At a time when prices for so many wines are skyrocketing out of control, Vajra’s prices are a breath of fresh air” as well as considering them, “one of Piedmont’s best kept secrets.” With their recent string of exceptional vintages, Vajra remain a secret no longer and those who are fortunate enough to secure an allocation of their 2016 vintage will certainly reap the rewards in years to come.
