“There are some fine white wines from Drouhin in 2022, and some absolutely gorgeous reds. The style of the vintage works very well with their winemaking.”
Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

The Burgundy 2022 En Primeur contiues with a producer whose allocations are typically so limited and highly sought after, that the 2022 vintage marks our very first general offer of the superlative range of wines from Maison Joseph Drouhin. Their trademark elegant style found in their organically and biodynamically produced wines make them suitable for early drinking, thanks to their freshness and subtlety, but are also crafted for long-term ageing.

Maison Joseph Drouhin has been run by the Drouhin family since its creation in 1880 and is now under management of the fourth generation of winemakers. The domaine consists of 80 hectares of their own vines across Chablis, the Cote de Nuits, the Cote de Beaune and the Cote Chalonnaise, encompassing close to 90 different appellations. More than two thirds of its holdings are Premier and Grand Cru sites, including Clos des Mouches, Musigny, Clos de Vougeot and Corton-Charlemagne. Joseph Drouin’s crowning glory in its portfolio of vineyards is the Montrachet Marquis de Laguiche Grand Cru site – the source for the eponymous wine which possesses incredible depth and potential.

In 1957, Robert Drouhin was one of the first winemakers in Burgundy to introduce culture raisonee with the aim of expressing the characteristics of each terroir. To this day the domaine takes a biodynamic approach to viticulture: ploughing with horses, using natural compost, and allowing the grass to grow in amongst the vines. By using only natural products in the vineyards the domaine ensures their work respects the soil, the vines and the environment. It is no surprise therefore that the domaine’s credo is “to bring natural answers to natural problems”. The vines are planted very close together – up to 12,500 per hectare – encouraging them to take deep root and express the minutiae of the terroir. Today the Domaine is run by Robert’s children: fourth generation Philippe, Veronique, Laurent and Frederic. There is also an estate in America, Domaine Drouhin Oregon, in the Willamette Valley which was established in the late 1980s. Philippe Drouhin manages the vineyards biodynamically, and as of 2009, their entire range has the ECOCERT organic certification.

Their wines are known for being well balanced and having great character. Those made for early drinking have freshness and subtlety, whilst the wines meant for keeping develop beautifully in the bottle with a luscious depth of complexity. For the reds there has been a more recent introduction of some whole-bunch fermentation for their Cote de Nuits range, however they remain faithful to their house style of elegance above all else.
