Today we are delighted to release Dom Perignon’s Plenitude, P2 2000, which has been awarded 96 points from Antonio Galloni. This means P2 is one of the highest ever scoring wines from Dom Perignon, which we are pleased to be able to offer for £590 per case of three bottles. We have previously released the extremely popular Oenotheque 1996, which we followed by the Plenitude 1998. The 1998 marked the first incarnation of Plenitude, a rebranding of the epitome of their winemaking and a rephrasing of the philosophy. The Champagne evolves through three plenitudes in life: the first plenitude forming between seven and eight years, which is when the standard Dom Perignon is released. The second plenitude comes between 12-15 years; this was previously referred to as the first Oenotheque, yet will now be called Plenitude 2, or P2, for the sake of brevity. The third window of plenitude forms after 30 years, following more than 20 years on its lees; this will now be labelled as P3.

P2 2000 is the second release of the 2000 vintage. Dom Perignon 2000 (P1) was disgorged in 2007 and released to market in 2008. The original release had spent over seven years ageing on its lees and was awarded 94 points from Antonio Galloni, who described it when he tasted it in 2009 as ‘a gorgeous, seductive wine that floats on the palate with remarkable grace. Toasty aromas meld into freshly cut flowers, apricots and pears, with sweet notes of mint and licorice that linger on the long finish.’ P2 2000 was disgorged in 2016, which means it has spent 16 years on its lees, extracting flavour, gaining nuance and complexity. P2 has recently been awarded 96 points from Antonio Galloni, who tasted it this year exclaiming it as creamy, seamless finish only adds to the wine’s considerable immediacy and sheer appeal. Baked apple, toast, brioche, pear, smoke, slate and lemon confit add nuances throughout. What a gorgeous wine this is.’  The evolution is evident and the quality immense.

Plenitude is the height of prestige Champagne and its global recognition means that it is now replacing Dom Perignon as the house’s most desirable Champagne. Dom Perignon ‘standard’ releases around two million bottles a year, yet a tiny part of the wine is kept back on its lees for extended ageing and only released when the Chef de Cave (Chief Winemaker) Richard Geoffrey feels the second or third maturity peak is reached. As can be seen from the table below, the scarcity is stretch by demand and creates excellent vintage premium. With 96 points the 2000 vintage stacks up brilliantly compared to the equal scoring 1995 which trades at £720, the 93 scoring 1993 which trades at £780 and the 95 point scoring 1976 which trades at £3,000 a case.

Plenitude is so multifaceted and commanding that it can be paired with some meats, while its finish is seemingly everlasting. P2 receives lower dosage, thereby exhibiting greater fruit purity, expressing the true quality for the terroir and minerality. Richard Geoffrey plainly explains the evolution: P1 (Dom Perignon) is “all about harmony, P2 is about energy, propelling it to a third level of integration and complexity.” Sadly, quantities are minuscule and collectors should look to collect these on release, before demand drives prices higher.

Slate, crushed rocks, apricot jam, mint, honeysuckle and mint are some of the notes that run through the 2000 Dom Pérignon P2. Open-knit, racy and seductive, the 2000 is a rare P2 that will drink well right out of the gate. The reductive character from long aging on the lees that is such a P2 signature adds nuance without overpowering the wine. There is wonderful breadth and amplitude here. In sum, the 2000 presents a striking interplay of the maturity that develops over extended time on lees and freshness.
