This afternoon, Rauzan Segla 2015 just released for £530 per case of 12 bottles, £44 per bottle. This release price makes this wine incredibly exciting and destined to sell out overnight. In 2015, the wines from the Margaux commune have excelled and none more so than Rauzan Segla, which aside from Chateau Margaux itself, has the highest score in the village with 96-98 points from Neal Martin and 97-98 from James Suckling. Neal Martin’s Wine Advocate score of 96-98 is higher than Chateau Palmer, which was awarded 95-97 and is likely to release at around £1,800 per case of 12 bottles.

The 2015 vintage represents Rauzan Segla’s highest ever score even surpassing the 2009 and 2010 which were awarded 95+ from the Wine Advocate and trade today at £800 and £760 respectively. As such, the release price is incredibly appealing, a 34% discount to its closest competing vintages. The 2015 also surpasses the 94+ scoring 2005 and as such there is a good chance Rauzan Segla will settle at around £800 a case once it is bottled. Simply put, the Estate have put collectors first, it is one of the wines of the vintage and at £530 a case of 12, it is unlikely many wines will compete with this on the value front – It is a must buy at this price!

Rauzan-Segla is a Second Growth from Margaux, vying with the likes of Chateau Palmer for pride of place after Chateau Margaux itself. In fact at the time of the 1855 classification the Estate was considered one of the truly great Second Growths. Thomas Jefferson ordered ten cases of Rauzan-Seglan 1790 after visiting Bordeaux in 1787, immediately declaring it as one of the top Second Growths. It has superb terroir and since 1994 the Estate has been owned by the Wertheimer Family of Chanel, who have put in place a superb wine making team headed up by David Orr and John Kolasa of Chateau Latour.

Chateau Rauzan-Segla is planted to 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc and produces only 10,000-12,000 cases a year, less than the majority of other First and Second Growths.

James Suckling, 97-98 Points
This is so sexy with superbly polished tannins that gives the wine super length and definition. Compacted and tight. Full body, tight yet flamboyant at the same time. Loving it.

Neal Martin, 96-98 Points  
The 2015 Rauzan-Segla is a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc cropped at 40 hl/ha between 10 September with the young Merlot vines and finishing with the Cabernet Sauvignon, which was picked between 22 September and 9 October. It is matured in 65% new oak for around 18 months. It has a very intense, almost crystalline bouquet with blackberry, briary, flint and just a touch of violet petal. There is incredible delineation here and the new wood is seamlessly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with extremely fine tannin, perfectly judged acidity, otherworldly purity and a mineralité rarely seen in this Margaux estate. This is a brilliant Rauzan-Ségla, not necessarily more powerful than previous vintages, though enhanced by its precision, frisson and energy, perhaps longer on the finish. Winemaker Nicolas Audebert has conspired with the benevolent growing season to produce a benchmark wine for the estate.
