En Primeur Expected Spring 2018

This morning marks the release of two potential 100 scoring wines, the stunning Chateau Palmer and the incredibly rare Peby Faugeres.

The first is the self-proclaimed First Growth, the cognitively dissonant Palmer, which in reality is a Third Growth in wolf’s clothing. Today’s price – brace yourself – is £1,080 per case of six bottles, an increase of 44% on 2014. There is no question Palmer 2015 is excellent, a potential 100 point wine, awarded 99-100 points from James Suckling and 95-97 from Neal Martin. However, today’s price offers no discount to the 2005 and very little to the 2009 and 2010. If you are not buying for investment and just to own great wine, Palmer 2015 is stunning and its potential 100 point score makes it a future legend. The critics are vociferous about just how good Palmer 2015 is, Suckling asks the question, ‘ The making of the new 1961.’ Note that 1961 Palmer is recognised as one of the greatest wines of all time. Martin also states  ‘a Palmer that will repay those with the nous to cellar it for 10-15 years. Expect it to reside at the top of my banded score.’

Despite its classification as a Third Growth, Palmer regularly surpasses the price and Parker points of many Second Growths and is considered by critics to be amongst the best produced wines anywhere in Bordeaux, second only to Château Margaux itself in the village of Margaux. Palmer is renowned for its beauty, perfume and concentration, its relatively high proportion of Merlot grapes in the blend makes it the Médoc’s most similar wine to those of Pomerol. The wine has a velvety smoothness with a high concentration of berry fruits and a floral nose of spring flowers.

Also released this morning is the very rare, polarising and hard to source Peby Faugeres. In 2015 Peby Faugeres is divisive, scoring an incredible 99-100 points form James Suckling, 96-98 from Jeve Leve, 93-96 from Wine Spectator, 19/20 from Rene Garbiel, 94-96+ from Antonio Galloni and 91-93 from Neal Martin. Peby Faugeres is a St Emilion wine on the rise, having been scored 100 points by Robert Parker in 2005 and now its highest ever score form Suckling, who calls it ‘Pure Merlot Magic’. Its release price today of £950 per case of 12 or £475 per case of six is appealing, with the 2005 trading at £1,450 and the 2009 £1,300, although availability is extremely thin.

The vineyard, which borders Cotes de Castillon is renowned for wonderful limestone and clay soils, with extremely old Merlot vines, some of the oldest on the right bank. Production is minuscule, with only 800 cases produced per year, among the lowest in Bordeaux. In 2015 Peby Faugeres have made a remarkable wine, which given its minuscule production, is sure to be a collector’s item.
