En Primeur Expected Spring 2018 

Chateau Montrose has released at £1,140 per case of 12 bottles, a 29% increase on 2014. However, the 2014 saw an increase of 39% on 2013. As such, this marks an 80% increase in two years. Last year signalled a re-positioning, partially justified, by its high score of 95-97 points from Neal Martin, although we still believed it to be too aggressively positioned. However, the 2015 has been awarded 93-95, a clear indication that we can expect Montrose to price above £1,000 per case of 12 bottles going forward.

Looking back at Montrose’s vintages, today’s release price looks completely unjustified, especially considering the exceptional 1996 Montrose, which was recently awarded 95 points by Robert Parker himself in 2014 and which is available today for £1,180. Montrose 1996 is a stunning example of a Montrose in the middle of its drinking window and it will continue to improve past 2030.

One of the premises of wine investment is that wines become rarer as they age, whilst at the same time improving in quality. As such, liquidity is found in younger vintages, when wines are not ready to consume and are supposedly offered at a discount to counteract opportunity costs. Good to excellent vintages have the composite structure to age and improve and their drinking horizon is longer than a vintage such as 2013 or 2007 which are poorer and therefore drink younger and lack the potential for true greatness. This limits truly age worthy vintages and therefore, leading vintages on the market with age are very rare. In the case of Montrose, its leading older vintages are 1989, 1990, 1996 and arguably 2000.  As the table below demonstrates, the Montrose 1996 is the best priced superb vintage. The 1990 and 1989 are far more expensive and extremely hard to source, while the 2000 has an equal score and is more expensive: the 2015 can only hope to score 95 at the peak of its grade and is only £40 cheaper!


We have tasted the 1996 five times over the last five years and it is glorious, utterly exceptional claret. It has another 20 years ahead of it and with 20 years in the rear view mirror, it does not require cellaring costs. For these reasons we think it makes sense in terms of short to mid-term investment and is a must own wine for drinking today, or until 2035. Our thesis is that the 1996, makes the 2015’s price indefensible, even if it is cheaper than Cos d’Estournel. Stock up on the 1996, it is the vintage the market will be clamouring over for drinking for the foreseeable future.

Chateau Montrose 2015

Neal Martin, 93-95 Points
The 2015 Montrose is a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc that was picked between 15 September and 8 October, the fruit sorted three times using three sorting tables, then an optical sorting machine and finally by hand. Matured in 65% new oak, it possesses some of the best aromatics you will find in the appéllation – billowing blackberry, cassis and boysenberry scents all beautifully defined and seamlessly integrated with the new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, commendable depth and a vibrant bead of acidity that lends this Montrose tension from start to finish. The class comes through strongly in this wine, perhaps the best Saint Estèphe this year. Give this a decade in bottle, more if you can, since Montrose tends to repay cellaring.

Chateau Montrose 1996

Robert Parker, 95 Points
This was a very strong year for the Medoc, as opposed to Graves and the Right Bank. The vintage has a very irregular reputation, but not so much for the Cabernet Sauvignon grape in the Medoc. Harvest occurred September 23 and finished October 6, a relatively short period, even at a large estate such as Montrose. The wine has sweeter tannins than the 1995, but doesn’t have quite the ripeness noticeable in 2003, 2005, 2009 and 2010. This wine is the classic, or more traditional style of Montrose, with dusty loamy soil notes intermixed with blackcurrant and blackberry fruit. Licorice, underbrush and floral notes were all present in this wine, which has good acidity and is not far from entering its plateau of full maturity. This was a year where Montrose used a lot of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend – 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot.
