In the 2015 vintage the Margaux excelled, with many considering it to be the leading commune.  Bordeaux is famed for its uber brands which dominate most narratives. This, however, leaves space for gems, superb estates, which produce world-beating wines that in some years are unmissable and worthy of global acclaim. In 2015 Malescot St. Exupery fits the bill! It has been awarded universally strong scores by critics, 97-98 points from James Suckling, 93-95 from the Wine Advocate and 92-95 from Antonio Galloni. Martin proclaims that ‘This is a superb Margaux’, while James Suckling posits ‘Sexy and rich finish. Better than the legendary 2009’. Malescot St. Exupery was released earlier this week for £370 per case of 12 bottles. It has been a triumph, selling out in Bordeaux, which is hardly surprising; it is priced at less than £30 a bottle!

Malescot St. Exupery’s high score in 2015 should hardly be surprising, it was awarded 96 points in 2005 and 2009 and 95 in 2010, which trade at £820, £640 and £570 respectively. Malescot St. Exupery is in fact a Third Growth in its own right, located in the centre of the village of Margaux, close to its fellow Third Growth Chateau Palmer.

Malescot St. Exupery’s 2015 release stacks up very well from a pricing/investment perspective, at £370 the 2015 will end up being one of the smartest buys of the campaign, it is not to be missed!

The origins of Chateau Malescot St Exupery can be traced back exactly 400 years to 1616. In the 1600s there were two owners of the Estate with royal connections. It started with the Escousses, who were notaries for the King. Then Simon Malescot, attorney-general to Louis XIV, took over the Estate near the close of the century. The Estate then changed hands many times, until the name gradually evolved to Malescot-St-Exupery, which achieved Third Growth status in the 1855 Classification.

In 1866 the Estate was sold to Boissac, a visionary who built the grand Chateau which sits on the Estate today and who also was the first to use gravity during to fermentation. The Estate then passed through both German and English ownership in 20th Century before Jean Luc of the Zuger family took over in 1994, bringing in world famous oenologist Michel Rolland as a consultant. On average the vines are 35 years old and they produce 13,000 cases a year. It is an Estate on the up and up and 2015 reaffirms its status as a rising star!

James Suckling, 97-98 Points  
The beauty in the fruit here is so impressive. Full body, super fine tannins. It’s very racy and incredibly long. Sexy and rich finish. Better than the legendary 2009? A blend of 70% cabernet savignon, 30% merlot.

Neal Martin, 93-95 Points  
The 2015 Malescot-St-Exupery has an intriguing and complex bouquet with oyster shells and seaweed infusing the intense black fruit. It is certainly well defined with nicely integrated new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, a keen thread of acidity, very pure and smooth in texture, gently unfolding towards the lightly spiced finish that lingers long in the mouth. This is a superb Margaux, surfeit with breeding and sophistication, though it will need 10-15 years in bottle.
