Haut Bailly 2015 has received incredible scores in 2015, awarded 98-99 from James Suckling, 95-97 from Neal Martin and Antonio Galloni, following the superb trend of great wines deriving from the Pessac-Leognan commune. Haut Bailly has a habit of creating special wines in leading vintages, having been awarded 100 points in 2009 and 98 in 2010, having been scored 96-98 and 95-97 originally from barrel. This bodes very well for the superb 2015, particularly given the comparative price. The 2015 has released at £720, while the 2009 and 2010 cost £1,050 and £1,450 respectively. Moreover, Neal Martin states ‘This Haut Bailly is up there with the 2009 and 2010 – a bravura Pessac-Léognan destined for long-term ageing’. This is extremely appealing and suggests Martin will rate it highly from bottle.

Haut Bailly dates back to the 16^th Century and today it is on the rise, established as one of the most sought after wines during en primeur, due to its high scores and low production: 7,500 cases a year. Unlike many wines in Graves they focus exclusively on red wines. The wine is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. The wine is renowned for wonderful purity and concentration of fruit, along with opulent mouthfeel and balance.

Their second wine La Parde de Haut Bailly is also worth serious attention and is one of the best second wines of a leading chateau to buy on release. In 2015 the Estate’s quality is reflected in La Parde, which is their best ever, scoring 92-93 from James Suckling and its highest ever form the Wine Advocate, 88-90. Martin says ‘This comes recommended.’  It is priced at £200 per case of 12, or £16 a bottle, magnificent value, for a stunning second wine we recommend highly.

James Suckling, 98-99 Points
This is a vivid and powerful red with lots of bright fruit and spice character. Full body, chewy tannins and loads of fruit on the finish. Firm and focused tannins. Lots of energy and vibrance. Spice and violet leaf undertone. Pure fruit. Pure structure.

Neal Martin, 95-97 Points
The 2015 Haut Bailly is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot (Véronique Sanders told me that the latter was planted three years ago.) My sample included 80% new oak, but there will be 50% in the final blend. Deep in color, the bouquet is very intense with multilayered blackberry, blueberry, crème de cassis and subtle black olive aromas, introverted at first but soon racing out of the blocks with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, quite firm tannin. This is an Haut-Bailly with real backbone, real sense of purpose. It could have tipped over into being overpowering due to that intense Merlot, but the acidity keeps everything in check and the finish demonstrates wonderful tension. In particular, the aftertaste is incredibly long in the mouth. This Haut Bailly is up there with the 2009 and 2010 – a bravura Pessac-Léognan destined for long-term ageing. Do yourself (and the wine) a favor and cellar it for 12 years, drinking the 2012 or 2013 before reaching for this.

Antonio Galloni, 95-97 Points
The 2015 Haut-Bailly is remarkably vivid for such a big wine. Firm beams of tannin give the 2015 much of its shape and overall energy, both of which the 2015 needs to balance its superb concentration. Sweet floral and spice notes give lift to the unctuous red cherry jam, pomegranate and blueberry flavors. The 2015 is likely to need quite a bit of time to come together, but it is already a very special wine. Even with all of its obvious depth, the 2015 retains gorgeous freshness. In 2015, the blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, the first time Petit Verdot has appeared in the blend.

James Suckling, 92-93 Points
Very minerally and salty with lots of dried fruit, currant and floral aromas and flavors. Full body, silky tannins and a fresh finish. Excellent second wine.

Antonio Galloni, 89-92 Points
A voluptuous, dark wine, the 2015 La Parde de Haut-Bailly offers notable depth. Black cherry, plum, graphite, leather and dark spices are all fused together. In 2015, La Parde is especially dense and inviting, which makes it a very serious second wine. The blend is 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc.

Neal Martin, 88-90 Points
The 2015 La Parde de Haut-Bailly has quite a high-toned bouquet with blueberry and cassis. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin, a hint of graphite with ample blackberry and blueberry. This is a structured La Parde de Haut-Bailly, grippy and slightly chalky with a precise finish. This comes recommended.
