We are delighted to be able to offer a wine that we look forward to every year, Barrua, known as the ‘Sardinian Sassicaia’. This is a coming together of the great talents of the producers of Sassicaia, superstar oenologist Giacomo Tachis and the Sardinian co-operative Santadi, this is perpetually a special wine. In the words of Antonio Galloni “How’s that for an all-star team?”At under £22 per bottle, a six bottle case is roughly the same price as a single bottle of Sassicaia itself and offers tremendous pleasure right now. This is one of their finest ever, equalling the 2010 for both James Suckling and Galloni’s Vinous Media – the value here is exceptional with a Price Over Points score of just 20.

Barrua was created fifteen years ago with the vision to fashion a truly exceptional Sardinian fine wine, true to the island and its long winemaking history. With the expertise of Giacomo Tachis, famed for his remarkable and pioneering use of Cabernet Sauvignon in Solaia and Sassicaia, these winemaking giants turned their minds to Carignano. This variety rules the centre of the Island and excels across Southern Italy, it is also used widely in Languedoc-Roussillon in France and Penedes and Priorat in Northern Spain. Barrua is made up of 85% Carignano, balanced with international varieties; 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot. 

In 2002, Agricola Punica purchased a 370 acre vineyard in the village of Barrua, in an area known as Sulcis Meridionale. The vineyard is cited inland, 140 metres from the coast and planted with old Carignano vines on highly sought after schist, with clay and some sand. The vineyard is rich in wild herbs and the environment is perfect for Carignano: the winter is mild and the summer is hot and dry, with the vineyard benefiting from the Sirocco African winds blowing across the Sardinian Sea. The grapes flourish in an extraordinary seven hours of sunlight a day, which enables wonderful ripeness and creates a situation where polymerization of the tannins begins within the berry while it is still on the vine. This is juxtaposed by the cooling influence of the sea, which regulates and brings harmony to the wines. 

The marriage of winemaking expertise and unique conditions allows Agricola Punica to produce a stunning wine at a price well below its pedigree. The wine displays wonderful tannic ripeness, delightful aromas, herbs and sweet spicy notes. This is without doubt the manifestation of Sardinia’s winemaking potential, with one of the world’s leading producers. We recommend this every year, and the 2013 is no exception.

Lovely precision to this red with berries, nutmeg and hints of stones. Subtle dried meat, too. Medium body, pretty texture and a refined finish. Always excellent. Drink now.

Fully saturated deep ruby. Leafy nuances and notes of sassafras dominate the deep but youthfully reticent dark red fruit on the nose. Then smooth and dense, with forward flavors of red cherry, dark plum, cassis, and aromatic herbs. Finishes very long and spicy, with peppery tannins and building complexity. For maximum enjoyment, put this away in the cellar and open it in three to four years only. This is a blend of Carignano, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
