Redigaffi is a global 100% Merlot superstar, with a plethora of 100 point scores behind it and with less than 700 cases made per vintage, it is a phenomenon. However, we have chosen to lead with Tua Rita’s other great wine, Giusto di Notri, which in recent years has become one of most sought after wines of its class. Don’t worry, Redigaffi is to follow, magnificent as it is. However, this has an elegant symmetry as Giusto di Notri’s first vintage was in 1992 and is considered the flagship wine of the Tua Rita Estate. Giusto di Notri offers superb value for money; made up of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Like Redigaffi the vines are grown 100 metres above sea level in Notri, Suvereto, where the soil is made up of medium textured clay and sand which helps retain water through the warm Summers.

The 2016 vintage follows on from the 2015 in terms of quality, yet not quantity. It is an impressive vintage, with the growing season beginning with cool, wet weather, however, while flowering was good, the cooler temperatures early on affected fertility reducing yields. From July the weather was hot and dry, with little rainfall leading into mid-August. Thereon temperatures dropped slightly, with warm days and cool nights leading into September. It is hard to compare vintages, yet 2016 is being likened early on in profile to cooler years such as the great 2006 and 2008; volumes are down by 1/5th. It comes as no surprise therefore that Giusto di Notri 2016 is stunning, awarded 94-95 points from James Suckling, an outstanding score for a wine we are delighted to release at £230 per case of six.

Giusto di Notri is a Super Tuscan in its own right, providing exceptional quality and providentially much more approachable than Redigaffi while young. Antonio Galloni awarded it 96 points in 2006 and 95 points in 2010. In 2013 Monica Larner of the Wine Advocate awarded it 98 points, again 96 points in 2015, it is a remarkable wine, a leading wine in its own right and with only 2,500 cases made in normal vintages and 2,000 in 2016, incredibly priced for the global supply.

The Cabernet Sauvignon vines used in Giusto di Notri are grown on the higher plots in where there is a greater pebble fraction, the Merlot is grown where the vineyards display more clay. It is important to recognise that while Redigaffi is 100% Merlot, the best Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc parcels go into the wonderfully concentrated Giusto di Notri. This also has rich micro-elements of iron and zinc, which leads to wonderful minerality and fresh acidity. As with Redigaffi, Tua Rita spare no expense with Giusto di Notri, maturing it for 18 months in new and once used French oak barrique. Guisto di Notri provides intense fruit flavour with a complex nose, combining floral aromas with liquorice and leather; older vintages display a touch of mushroom. It offers immense value and a more affordable way to drink the flagship Bordeaux-style blend from the great Estate of Tua Rita.

Redigaffi has been awarded 100 points three times, once in 2000 by the Wine Advocate and 100 points from the Wine Spectator in 1997: in 2015 it was awarded another perfect score by James Suckling. Its acclaim is cemented and it is one of the perennially highest scoring wines in the world. It is fast becoming considered one of the leading 100% Merlots, in fact Isa Bal, the Master Sommelier of the Fat Duck describes Redigaffi as ‘one of the top three Merlots in the world‘. Moreover and perhaps most interestingly, Redigaffi has recently become a darling in Asia and with such minuscule production, it will become extremely costly to secure Redigaffi in the coming years. James Suckling, who lives in Asia, has stated that ‘The pure merlot, which is one of the hottest collectible wines in Asia, is pure magic with balance, richness and clarity.’ In 2016 it has been awarded 97-98 points by James Suckling, among its highest ever, of it Suckling says ‘Dead serious finish! Hard to beat the 100-point 2015, but who knows? 100% merlot.’ A truly remarkable wine, world class and a must own wine for any portfolio.
